Description
In this course, we begin by discussing what melodic style banjo is, how it developed and why it developed?
Melodic style banjo was largely developed to play more melody notes. Banjoists began experimenting with the technique to play fiddle tunes and classical type material on the instrument.
This style was made famous by artists such as Bill Keith, Bobby Thompson, and today, artists such as Bela Fleck widely use this technique.
Next, you will learn how to play your G, C, and D major scales in the Melodic style banjo.
I also cover a few basic melodic licks that you can insert into the song "Cripple Creek." These licks fit your G and C chords.
Lastly, I teach some scale exercises to further develop your flexibility with the technique. Part of these techniques include playing the scale in 3rds and different groupings.
By the time you are done with the course, you will have a good introduction to the style and be equipped to play in the 5th to 7th fret area of the banjo using melodic style.
NO TABLATURE IS USED IN THIS COURSE, demonstrations are done visually with frets/strings appearing onscreen. The name of the notes are also used throughout the video, as part of the goal should be to learn the neck of the instrument.
PREREQUISITES: Not for pure beginners. Should understand what notes are in which scales (Key Signature-Music Theory)
Who this course is for:

- Banjo students that want more fingerboard knowledge
Instructor
I've taught and played music professional for over 25 years. During that time I was fortunate enough to perform on the stages of Carnegie Hall, The Grand Ole Opry and the Ryman Auditorium. I'm a 3X GA State Banjo and Guitar contest champion.
In addition to maintaining an online teaching studio of over 20 private students, I play private events around the Southeastern U.S, both solo and in groups. I'm the go to banjoist for the "High Lonesome Mass" written by Choral Composer Tim Sharp. We've played this piece all over the world (China/Mongolia/Argentina/etc)
I am an acoustic music specialist-bluegrass, jazz, folk, and classical. In addition to playing bluegrass for 20 years, I studied improvisation and Jazz under nationally acclaimed pianist Kevin Bales for 5 years. Studying under a pianist as a guitarist allowed me to have quite a unique perspective on all of my instruments. Other training includes vocal lessons, guitar and composition lessons.
I love playing, teaching and working with people from all backgrounds and ages.
My goal is to help you reach your goals along this musical journey!!
