Discover the foundational principles of Ayurveda and develop a deeper understanding of this traditional system of wellness, balance, and holistic living. This comprehensive course is designed to introduce you to the core concepts of Ayurveda and show how its traditional frameworks connect the elements, mind-body constitutions, digestion, tissues, daily routines, seasonal living, and nutrition.
You will begin by exploring the historical origins, philosophy, and fundamental principles of Ayurveda. You will learn about the relationship between Yoga and Ayurveda and discover the Panchamahabhutas, or Five Great Elements, that form an important foundation of Ayurvedic thought. The course will also introduce Prakriti, the individual constitution, and Vikriti, the concept used to describe an individual's current state of imbalance.
A major part of the course focuses on the Tridosha theory. You will explore Vata, Pitta, and Kapha, including their traditional characteristics, functions, and qualities. You will also learn about dual-doshic and tri-doshic constitutions and examine how Ayurvedic theory describes the role of the doshas in the progression of health imbalances and disease.
The course then takes you into the important Ayurvedic concepts of Agni, Ama, Dhatus, and Srotas. You will learn about Agni and its traditional relationship with digestion and overall health, examine the four states of Agni, and understand the Ayurvedic concept of Ama. You will also be introduced to the Sapta Dhatus, or seven bodily tissues, and Srotas, the channels described in Ayurvedic physiology.
You will then explore practical lifestyle concepts through Ayurvedic daily and seasonal routines. Learn about Dinacharya, traditional daily routines designed around principles of regularity and balance, as well as Ratricharya and traditional approaches to evening routines and sleep. You will also study Ritucharya and how Ayurvedic practices are traditionally adjusted according to seasonal changes.
The Ayurvedic clock and traditional concepts of dosha dominance throughout the day will help you understand how time is incorporated into Ayurvedic lifestyle frameworks. You will also be introduced to Rasayana and its traditional rejuvenation concepts.
Nutrition is another key component of this course. You will explore the Shad Rasa, or six tastes, and learn how Ayurveda traditionally describes their qualities and effects. You will study Virya, the concept of potency, and Vipaka, the post-digestive effect, and examine traditional dietary considerations for Vata, Pitta, and Kapha. You will also learn about Viruddha Ahara, or incompatible food combinations, and understand its place within traditional Ayurvedic dietary principles.
By the end of this course, you will have a structured foundation in major Ayurvedic concepts, including the Five Elements, Prakriti, Vikriti, Tridosha theory, Agni, Ama, Dhatus, Srotas, daily and seasonal routines, Rasayana, and Ayurvedic nutrition. You will be better equipped to understand Ayurvedic terminology and traditional frameworks and to explore further studies in Ayurveda, holistic wellness, and related fields.
This course is suitable for beginners, wellness enthusiasts, students of Ayurveda and Yoga, holistic health learners, nutrition enthusiasts, and anyone interested in learning about traditional Ayurvedic principles and lifestyle practices. No advanced background in Ayurveda is required; the course is structured to build your understanding progressively from foundational concepts to more detailed Ayurvedic frameworks.
