Smudging is a cleansing and clearing practice that crosses multiple cultures and religions. It is a practice whereby you are cleansing the energies and atmosphere all around you through the burning of certain plants. You can fan the smoke out into a room, cleansing and clearing the energies within it.
Some of the most common smudging plants are dried:
· Juniper
· Sage
· Sweet Grass
· Cedar
· Holy wood (aka Palo Santo wood) 1
· Incense or other smudge of choice
Smudging yourself is easy. Here is what you will need before you begin:
· A fire safe bowl,
· Sage or other type of smudge,
· A lighter or matches,
· A feather
· A clear intention for why you are smudging (clearing, lifting, releasing, bringing in love and light).
When you are ready, decide if you are going to be smudging yourself outside or inside. If you are inside, you will need to open a window or door at either end of the house or building you are in, to promote a free flow of air and energy. If you are smudging yourself outside, there is no need for ventilation.
Here are the steps I use to smudge myself:
· Create an intention for the smudging practice. Here is an example of an intention I use when I smudge myself:
“I am releasing all lower energies that are no longer serving my highest and greatest good. I am letting go of grief, fear, stress, and disappointment.
I would like to replace the lower energies with peace, love, light, joy, compassion and gratitude.”
NOTE: If there are specific emotions you are struggling to release, substitute those for the grief, fear, stress, and disappointment.
· State your intention for smudging out loud, putting the reverberation of intention out into your field.
· Next place a few pieces of sage, or the smudge of choice, in a fire safe bowl. If using a sage stick or smudge stick, having a fire safe bowl helps to catch any embers. I have found when smudging myself the loose smudge in a small fireproof bowl is much easier to work with because you can set the bowl down and your hands are free. When I use a smudge stick and a feather, I have found that putting a small amount of sand in the bottom of the bowl or shell keeps it from getting too hot to handle.
· Light your smudge and start speaking your intention as the smoke rises. Use your hands to capture and redirect the rising smoke over your head. It is the same motion of washing water over your head, using your hands to capture it. If you are using a smudge stick and a feather, sweep the smoke over the top of your head. Continue to think and say your intention softly as you capture and sweep the smoke.
· Then using your palms to capture and redirect the smoke, wash it over your face. If you are using a smudge stick, sweep the smoke over and across your face. Continue to think and say your intention.
· Then continue to wash it over and up your arms, one at a time. If you are using a smudge stick and feather, sweep the smoke in an upward direction from you hands up to your shoulders, one side at a time.
· Then wash the smoke over your heart center and up your torso (solar plexus and sacral). If using the smudge stick and feather, seep the smoke upwards from your sacral up towards your heart center. Continue to say your intention.
· Then smudge from your root chakra upwards.
· Finally smudge your legs and feet as best you can. (You may need to sit for these areas) Continue to say your intention.
· When you are done clearing any lower energy vibrations; set a positive intention like “Let my inner light shine brightly and my heart remain full of love and gratitude”. Then wash the smoke over you with your hands until you feel the energetic shift speaking your new intention. You will feel lighter and a shifting or lifting of energy off and around you.

Setup Statement:
The setup statement is a statement to start you off. It is about what is upsetting you or what you want to shift in your thinking. For example:
Even though I have this (enter problem) problem I love and accept myself.
Tapping Points
Karate Chop Point
Eyebrow Points (where the beginning of the eyebrow starts)
Follow the Eyebrow bone around and down to the side of your eye
Then come around the bottom of the eye, along the bone and tap on the center eye point
Then tap underneath the nose
The chin point crease between your lip and your chin
Then tap your collar bone points (you can use your whole open hand if you like)
Then underneath your arm about a hand width from your armpit (or along your bra line)
Then end with the top of the head
Emotional Freedom Tapping for Self Love, Care and Acceptance
1. Tapping the Karate Chop Point
Even though I feel discouraged when I don’t reach all my goals for the day, I accept and love myself and how I am feeling; (deep breath) and I now choose to feel optimistic recognizing all I have already accomplished.
2. Tapping the Eyebrow Points
Even though I worry about what other people will think, I love and accept myself and how I am feeling; (deep breath) and I now choose to feel content and confident with my authentic self and my authentic truth.
3. Tapping the Side of the Eye
Even though I am anxious about disappointing others, I love and accept myself; and how I am feeling. (deep breath) I now choose to let go, feeling relaxed and calm inside.
4. Tapping Under The Eye
Even though I am afraid something bad will happen if I speak my truth, I love and accept myself; and how I am feeling. (deep breath) I now choose stand firmly in my personal power and truth.
5. Tapping Under The Nose
Even though I feel all this pressure and judgement from others; I accept myself and how I am feeling. (deep breath) I now choose to feel happy and comfortable with the choices that I make, because they are the right choices for me.
6. On The Middle Of The Chin
Even though I feel unsure about the future; I love and accept myself (deep breath). I now choose to feel empowered, strong, and determined.
7. On The Collar Bone Points (King Kong Points)
Even though I put everyone else’s needs ahead of my own, I love and accept myself and how I am feeling. (deep breath) I now choose to recognize that my need for self-care is not selfish; it is self-sustaining and necessary.
8. Under The Arm Points
Even though I am worried that my busy life will prevent me from incorporating what I am learning; I love and accept myself; and how I am feeling. (deep breath) I now choose to be in control of my life, creating new healing routines for my highest and greatest good. (smile)
9. Top Of Head Points
Even though the façade I put on for others make me feel unwell; I love and accept myself for how I am feeling. (deep breath) I now choose to accept my authentic self and love that part of who I am.

17. Under The Arm Points – I let go of the need for things to go perfectly; being ok with uncertainty and the unknowns in life.
18. Top Of Head Points – I can’t change things that are out of my control, so I choose to release control, breathe, and relax; allowing things to unfold as they are meant to unfold.

25.On The Collar Bone Points – I appreciate learning new tools, as I am starting to feel stronger and more confident, embracing my authenticity.
26.Under The Arm Points – I don’t have to take on so much; it is ok to say No. I do not have to fix other people’s problems. (isn’t that the truth) Say that again “I do not have to fix other people’s problems”.
27.Top Of Head Points – Loving myself means taking the time I need to relax, process, learn, heal, and grow. It is important to take time for me.
Take 3 deep breaths in.
Place your hands on your heart, close your eyes and take three big slow breaths in.
Notice how you will feel. Are you happier? More resolute for the need to chisel out time for you. Your needs are important, you have value; your authentic path and truth are important.
Self-love, care and acceptance is very important to keep your energy up. Taking time for you is essential for maintaining your whole body, mind and spirit.

Even though I sometimes question my own decisions, I love and accept myself for how I am feeling. (breath) I now choose to start listening to my heart and trust my inner knowing, as this is part of my intuition that is helping me with guidance.

Even though I dream of things that seem far out of reach, I love and accept myself for how I am feeling. (breath) I now choose to break my dreams down into smaller more achievable goals, taking baby steps to success.
