Of course, if you want to get a head start on all this, I've put together a no holes barred guide to Awakening Your True Calling

You know: Sometimes life just gets in the way!

A lot of people start out with good intentions when they leave secondary, but then get sidetracked into doing something other than they originally wanted.  Maybe the economy was in bad shape and they had to take whatever job was available.  Maybe there were family circumstances that necessitated a different career path than the one originally intended. Perhaps what they wanted was so unusual that their parents/friends/high school guidance counsellor just didn't “get it” and talked them into getting a “real job” instead. Others really didn't have a clue what they wanted at age 18 and just drifted with the tide.

If any of those people sound like you, don't despair.  This time next week you'll have a much better idea of what you can do to awaken your true calling and live the life you were meant to live.

  • 5 Ways to Uncover Your True Calling2:19

You may be grown up now, but that little kid you were years ago is still locked up deep inside your psyche. Most of us form our key opinions and desires while we're still at elementary school.  Consciously you might forget them, but they're still locked away deep inside your brain.

So the question you need to ask yourself is:

What did you dream about doing when you were young?

OK, so if your ambition in life was to be Superman or Wonder Woman, maybe that's not going to happen now!

    But…

If your childhood ambition is still practical, you could yet consider doing it.

So think back to what you and your friends used to do at recess when you were (say) in 4th grade.  I'm not talking about playing games like “tag” or football, but the sort of role-playing games kids often play at that age.

Perhaps you used to pretend you were flying a plane or being a police officer. On the other hand, maybe your desires were more modest and you would daydream about running a store or becoming a homemaker.

Either way, if you're not happy with the life you're leading now, delving back to those childhood fantasies could hold the key to your true calling.

And if you STILL hanker to be Superman or Wonder Woman?

Well, Clark Kent's day job as a journalist, and Diana Prince worked for the department of antiquities at a museum, and then (later on) worked as a translator. Jobs like those are still doable – maybe by you!

  • 6 Easy Ways to Find Your Life's Purpose2:39

Yesterday we talked about what you liked to do when you were a kid.  Today I want to talk about what you enjoy doing today, now you're an adult.

    The thing is…

If you have a hobby you can turn into a business, then it doesn't feel like work.  Wouldn't it be great if EVERY day felt like Saturday – AND you got paid for it?

Think about what you like to do on your days off. This is often the key to your "TRUE CALLING"

    For instance…

If you spend your weekends playing golf – and you're pretty good at it – maybe golf pro is your true calling. There are pro-am tournaments all over the place.  Why not enter one and see how you stack up against the competition?  You don't have to dive into the deep end and enter the US Open, but oftentimes there are local tournaments all over the place that you could enter. Once you've won a few and established your credentials as a highly-skilled golfer, you can approach golf clubs and let them know you're available for hire – or maybe they'll try to “headhunt” you; who knows?

Likewise, if you fill your evenings designing websites “just for the heck of it”, then maybe a website designer or graphic designer is your true calling.  “Test the waters” by advertising your services on sites like http://fiverr.com or http://upwork.com before plunging in full time.  The great thing about this type of call is you can work it in addition to your regular job – so if it turns out not to be for you, after all, you've not risked anything.

If you spend your free time baking cakes or making clothes from scratch, perhaps being a baker or seamstress is your true calling.

I could go on, but I think you get the picture.

  • Discover How to Find Your True Calling in Life2:25

Today's lesson kind of follows on from yesterday's.

When you're at work, and you've not got anything much to do, and your boss isn't looking, what do your thoughts tend to stray too?

Even the most exciting jobs have their slack time and aspects that can be tedious. What do you think about then? Oftentimes, if your mind keeps wandering to a particular topic, that is an indication of your true calling.

OK, so your boss might call it “goofing off”, and like most bosses, he/she wants to get the most out of your time.  But if you're stuck in the wrong profession, sometimes this so-called “goofing off” can lead to significant breakthroughs.

    A case in point…

Everybody remembers Albert Einstein as a famous scientist, but did you know that his first job after college was as a lowly clerk in the Swiss patent office? Day after day, Einstein evaluated patent applications for uninspiring stuff like gravel sorters and typewriters.

However, because the job was just so incredibly boring, his mind used to wander and daydream. It was during this time that he began working on his PhD thesis and did the early work on his groundbreaking Theory of Relativity.  All this led to him being recognized as a leading scientist.  He found his true calling and the rest is history.

Einstein later said that because he didn't need to do much thinking or concentrating in his day job, it left his mind free to work away in the background.

So pay attention to your daydreams; oftentimes it's your subconscious trying to point you in the right direction.

  • Find Your True Passion With These 5 Creativity Exercises2:28

In this lesson, you will discover how to find your true passion with these 5 creative exercises.

We've talked about over the past few days, you may now be starting to get some idea about what your true calling is.

We've reached the point where a lot of people go:

Yes, well, but… What if my true calling doesn't pay well? I can't afford to quit my job to follow my dreams.

The sad fact is: You may have avoided your true passion because it doesn't support your lifestyle. If so, you're not alone – lots of people do.  In fact, I'd say that's the number one reason why people stay stuck in jobs they hate: Because they pay well.  What can they do?

Like it says at the top of this e-mail: I know the answer to that question!

Actually, there are several answers, depending on what your true calling is.

If your true calling is digitally creative (like we talked about the other day) you can offer your services on fiverr.com, and work in the evenings and weekends until you have a sizable portfolio to show people.  Then offer your services on other platforms that pay a bit more.  Gradually, as you build up a following and get more repeat business, you'll reach the point where you're making as much from your true calling as you're getting from your j-o-b.  Then you can quit your job and follow your true calling without it harming your lifestyle.

If your true calling is something that genuinely doesn't pay much – and isn't likely to, either – consider creating a sideline business that can support you and your family while you follow your dreams.

Thankfully, the Internet has made it possible to generate a passive (or almost passive) income quite easily – from reselling web hosting to running a dropshipping business on eBay, the opportunities are almost endless.  Find one that you can fit around your true calling, and have the best of both worlds.

  • Set Yourself Up For Success With These 5 Rules of Goal Setting2:34

In this lesson, you will learn how to set yourself up for success with these tips of goal setting we've been talking about over the past week or so, you may be wondering if you've left it too late to follow your true calling.

I don't know you personally, [firstname], so I don't know how old you are, but regardless of your age, banish any thoughts of that nature from your mind.

The best time to awaken your true calling is now!

Obviously, when you're young and have the whole of your life ahead of you, it's a great time to follow your true calling, but later in life is OK, too.

When you're in your 50's, the kids have fled the nest and the mortgage is paid off, you don't need so much money anyway – so why not make up for lost time and do what you've always wanted to do?

Alternatively, when you're retired, you've got plenty of time.  You'll likely have a pension coming in, too, so even if your true calling doesn't pay anything, you can do it to benefit others.

This last option is often a worthy one.

When I was growing up there was this guy who lived across the street from my grandparents. He'd always wanted to be an entertainer, but when he came home from serving in the Army, his parents pressured him into taking over from them and running the family business instead. He ended up running the place until he retired.

Instead of taking it easy, he decided to awaken his true calling and started a barbershop quartet that used to go round hospitals and old folks' homes to entertain the patients and residents (for free).  I saw them once, and they were pretty good.  He died a few years ago, but his last years were his happiest.
