General information you should know about Australia

Criteria for taking the Australian Citizenship Test

To take the Australian Citizenship Test, you must be a permanent resident of Australia and have applied for Australian citizenship. The test is part of the citizenship application process.

After applying for Australian citizenship, eligible applicants will receive a confirmation letter or email containing information about the test, including the test centre location, test date and required documentation.

Cost of the Australian Citizenship Test

The citizenship test does not cost anything extra. The test fee is included in your citizenship application fee. You do not need to pay an additional fee if you need to take the test more than once.

Format of the Australian Citizenship Test

The citizenship test is a multiple-choice test consisting of 20 questions. Each question has three possible answers, and you must select the answer you believe is correct.

The test is conducted in English, so you will need a basic understanding of English to pass. The pass mark is 75 per cent, meaning you must answer at least 15 questions correctly.

Most people take the Standard Test, which is computer-based and has a time limit of 45 minutes. This gives you approximately 2.25 minutes per question. Assistance with using the computer may be available if you are unfamiliar with computers.

Australian Citizenship Test Study Material

The test questions are based on the testable section of the official resource book, Australian Citizenship: Our Common Bond.

You should study all the information in the testable section because you will not know which questions will appear in your test.

Australian Citizenship Test Rules

During the test, you cannot refer to the resource book or any other study materials. You must not speak to anyone except the test administrator.

After completing the test, the computer will notify you whether you have passed or failed. You may be able to take the test again, possibly on the same day.

If you pass the Australian Citizenship Test, your result will be automatically transferred to your citizenship application. You will then need to wait for the overall outcome of your citizenship application.
