Welcome to the course!  Here's a little introduction to what we hope to accomplish and to me as the instructor.

Requirements

  • There is no sea time required for this endorsement, and this endorsement can be added to captain's licenses up to 200 tons. The testing for the endorsement occurs at a Coast Guard Regional Exam Center.

Description

This course is helpful information for any mariner, but particularly those looking to add an assistance towing endorsement to their Coast Guard license in the USA.  Towing can be a dangerous business, and this course describes safety, operations, and rules of the road (COLREGS) for towing as a commercial assistance provider at license levels of less than 200 tons in the USA.

The course material describes towing dangers, procedures, and terminology, and also includes a sample exam with video solutions to all the problems.  Whether you are planning to test or not, this will make you a better boater!

If you are planning to test for your towing endorsement, you can do so at any Coast Guard Regional Exam Center, after submitting an application to do so. This endorsement is eligible to add to USCG licenses with no experience required other than the examination.  The final exam at the USCG regional exam centers is 20 questions long with a minimum passing score of 70%.  There are sample examinations and examination question banks embedded in this course for you to practice with.  Good luck!

This course is part of the license preparation series which also includes courses on Rules of the Road (COLREGS), as well as vessel stability, navigational math, and chart plotting.  Some of those courses are available here on Udemy at discount prices.  Ultimately your Coast Guard license requires you to pass a series of tests, and this towing course is an optional endorsement you can add on to it.

Who this course is for:

  • Recreational and commercial mariners interested in learning more about safe towing at sea, or adding an assistance towing endorsement to their merchant mariner credential.
