  • Welcome to Candle Crafting: History, Purpose, and Your Journey Ahead2:37

Welcome to Craft Candles Like a Boss, brought to you by Pursuing Wisdom Academy.

You’re about to embark on an exciting, hands-on journey where ancient tradition meets modern creativity. Candle making is more than just melting wax—it is the art of blending purpose, beauty, and even wellness into something you create with your own hands.

Throughout history, candles have held a sacred place in human life. The first candles, dating back to ancient Egypt around 3000 BC, were made from natural tallow. They provided more than light—they symbolized hope, ritual, and community.

The Romans later elevated candle making by introducing beeswax candles, considered a luxury item reserved for temples and elite gatherings. Fast forward to the Middle Ages, and candle makers became integral to everyday life in Europe, creating both ceremonial and household candles. By the 16th century, with the discovery of spermaceti wax and later stearin, candles became brighter, cleaner, and more efficient.

Today, we make candles for more than light. We craft them to set a mood, elevate wellbeing, support rituals, and celebrate beauty.

In this course, you will discover how to:

    • Choose the right wax—from soy, beeswax, and coconut to innovative blends.

    • Blend essential oils to create signature aromatherapy candles that calm, uplift, or inspire.

    • Color your candles using eco-friendly techniques that bring personality and vibrancy to every piece.

    • Master testing methods to achieve the perfect burn and fragrance throw.

    • Craft stunning candle recipes you can personalize, gift, or sell.

    • Build eco-conscious habits, recycling old candles and minimizing waste.

Whether you are here to explore a creative hobby, design gifts that carry emotional meaning, or one day launch your own candle brand, you are in the right place.

This is not just about making candles.
This is about crafting your personal expression.
It’s about understanding the science of wax and the soul of scent.

You will learn not only how candles are made—but why they matter.

You’ll also earn a symbolic Crafting Certificate upon completion—a badge of honor recognizing your new skills, creativity, and passion.

By the end of this course, you will have the confidence and skills to:

    • Create candles that stand out.

    • Blend therapeutic aromas for emotional wellbeing.

    • Design eco-friendly, sustainable candle projects.

    • Share your creations with pride, knowing you crafted them like a boss.

  • Improving Your Course Experience0:49
  • Hands-On: Crafting Your First Soy Candle with Essential Oils9:03

Welcome to your first hands-on project at Pursuing Wisdom Academy!
In this lesson, we’re going to create your very first soy candle, blending beautiful color and scent.

Let's start by gathering your materials:

    • Soy wax flakes

    • Wick and wick sticker

    • Wick bar or centering tool

    • Double boiler (or heat-safe melting pot)

    • Thermometer

    • Fragrance oils or essential oils

    • Liquid or chip dye (optional)

    • Glass jar or heat-safe container

    • Scissors for trimming the wick

    Step 1: Measure Your Wax

Using a kitchen scale, measure about half a pound (8 ounces) of soy wax flakes. This amount is perfect for a standard 8 oz jar.

    Step 2: Secure the Wick

Attach a wick sticker or glue dot to the metal base of your wick.
Press the wick firmly into the center of your container.
Use a wick bar to hold it upright and centered—this will ensure an even burn later on.

    Step 3: Melt the Wax

Fill your double boiler or a saucepan with water and bring it to a gentle simmer.
Place your wax-filled melting pot into the water bath, slowly heating the wax.
Stir occasionally and watch the temperature carefully.

Target temperature for melting soy wax: 170°F–185°F (76°C–85°C).
At 185°F, your wax is hot enough to fully absorb fragrance and dye.

Step 4: Add Fragrance and Color

    Once your wax reaches 185°F:

    • Add 6–10% fragrance oil by weight (typically around 0.5–0.8 ounces for this batch).

    • Stir slowly but thoroughly for at least 2 minutes to fully bind the fragrance into the wax.

    • Add 3–5 drops of liquid dye (optional) to create your desired color.
Tip: Always check your dye labels carefully—similar names like "lemon yellow" and "sunset orange" can look very different in finished candles!

    Step 5: Pour and Cure

Let your wax cool to 135°F–145°F (57°C–63°C) before pouring.
This cooler temperature helps prevent sinkholes and improves scent throw.

Pour the wax slowly into the container, avoiding air bubbles.
Secure your wick again if necessary.

Allow the candle to cure undisturbed for 24–48 hours.
Curing allows the scent to fully stabilize, ensuring your candle burns beautifully.

    Step 6: Final Touches

After curing, trim your wick to about ¼ inch before burning.
This helps reduce soot and promotes an even flame.

    Step 7: Test and Celebrate

Light your candle and conduct a quick burn test:

    • Is the flame steady?

    • Is there good scent throw?

    • Is the wax melting evenly across the surface?

If so—congratulations! You’ve successfully crafted your first eco-friendly soy candle.

At Pursuing Wisdom Academy, we believe every candle tells a story—yours.
Enjoy your creation, and get ready to explore even more designs, colors, and fragrances as we continue this journey together!

See you in the next lesson!

  • Let's Make a Beeswax Candle With a Wood Wick!10:14

How to Make a Soy Candle with a Wooden Wick

Craft Candles Like a Boss | Pursuing Wisdom Academy

Ready to dive into hands-on candle magic? In this lesson, we’ll walk you through making a classic soy wax candle using a wooden wick. If you love that cozy crackling sound while your candle burns, wood wicks are a must-try!

Step 1: Measure Out Your Soy Wax

To start, measure out enough soy wax flakes to fill your container. As a general rule, two cups of soy wax flakes will fill an 8-ounce jar. For this demo, we’re making one 8 oz candle.

    • First cup: Pour it in.

    • Second cup: Ready to go.

Set your wax aside for melting.

Step 2: Prepare Your Wooden Wick

While your wax is heating, prep your container and wick.

    • Grab a heat-safe jar.

    • Attach your wood wick to a metal wick clip if not already assembled.

    • Apply a wick sticker (or a small dab of hot glue) to the base of the metal clip.

    • Press firmly into the center of your jar for good adhesion.

If your wick looks way too tall, trim it down to about ½ inch taller than your jar before pouring. Later, you’ll do a final trim after the wax sets!

    Step 3: Melt Your Wax

Use a double boiler or a dedicated wax melting pitcher. Gently melt the wax until it reaches around 185°F (85°C). Stir occasionally for even melting. Always monitor the temperature closely using a candle thermometer.

? Pro Tip: Never leave melting wax unattended. Safety first!

Step 4: Add Color and Fragrance

Once your wax hits the right temperature:

    • Add color: In this candle, we’re using red liquid dye (3 drops) and brown dye (2 drops) for a rich autumnal tone. Stir gently.

    • Add fragrance: We’re using a fireside fragrance oil. Measure out your fragrance at about 6–10% of your wax weight.
Example: For 8 oz of wax, use about 0.5 oz of fragrance oil. Stir slowly but thoroughly to combine.

Always mix for a full 1–2 minutes to ensure your fragrance binds properly with the wax!

    Step 5: Pour the Wax

Carefully pour the melted, scented, colored wax into your prepped jar.

    • Pour slowly to avoid air bubbles.

    • Leave a small gap (about ¼ inch) at the top of the container.

Ensure your wood wick stays centered by using a wick stabilizer tool or clothespin if needed.

    Step 6: Let It Set

Allow your candle to cool and cure undisturbed for at least 24–48 hours. Soy wax can look frosty or rough at the top when setting — this is normal! You can smooth imperfections later with a heat gun if you want a polished look.

    Step 7: Trim the Wick

    Once fully cooled:

    • Trim your wooden wick down to about ¼ inch above the wax.

    • A good sharp wick trimmer or scissors will work.

This ensures a steady, clean burn every time you light it!

    ? Key Reminders:

    • Center your wood wick firmly before pouring.

    • Always check labels when adding dyes or fragrance oils — color mixing can surprise you!

    • Cure candles for at least 24–48 hours for best fragrance throw.

    • Safety first: never move a freshly poured candle until fully set.

Congratulations — you’ve just made your very own DIY wood wick soy candle!
