Description

Discover the richness, intensity, and layered meanings of Arabic pre-Islamic poetry in this unique course — the first volume in a series dedicated to decoding the genius of classical Arabic verse, one poem at a time.

In this course, we will dive deeply into one of the most powerful odes by the legendary poet Ta’abbata Sharran, a rebellious figure from the early Arabic tradition. You will hear the poem recited with full diacritics (tashkeel), then walk through it word by word, breaking down its vocabulary, poetic structure, and rich imagery.

This course offers a two-level analysis:

  • Cultural & Contextual — We explore the world behind the poem: the life of the poet, the environment, themes of survival, identity, defiance, and tribal values.

  • Linguistic & Rhetorical — We decode the metaphors, literary devices, and meanings hidden in the powerful Arabic expressions.

This course is ideal for learners of Arabic, students of literature, or anyone curious about the poetic roots of Arabic culture. No prior expertise is needed — just curiosity and a love of language.

In each lesson, you'll also learn about the role of rhythm and repetition, poetic meter, and why these poems were not just literary works but oral legacies passed down for centuries. We aim to reconstruct the historical moment and emotional urgency in which the poem was composed.

You will also be invited to reflect critically on how poetic language constructs identity, power, and memory.

By the end, you’ll not only understand the poem — you’ll feel it.

Let’s begin this poetic journey together — one verse at a time.
