Sustainability in Fashion: Is Waste the End Point or the Beginning?
Presented by Daniella Platt | Consumer Behavior Expert Helping Brands with Sales + Storytelling

    Hi everyone,

Today we’re exploring a vital topic: Sustainability in Fashion. And we’re going to answer a big question:
Is waste the endpoint—or the fuel for new beginnings?

I’m Daniella Platt, and this is Sustainability Principles and Practices for Fashion.

To start, lets begin with identifying the Problem via a Sneakers as a Case Study

Let’s start with something we all love—sneakers.

The average consumer buys three pairs of sneakers per year. That adds up to 23 billion sneakers produced globally.
This production contributes over 313 million metric tons of CO₂ emissions—equivalent to 66 million cars on the road.
And here's the real kicker: 80% of sneakers end up in landfills.

So how do brands win here?

Let’s take a look at Allbirds, a brand that’s innovating with fewer parts, recyclable materials, and ethical production.
This brings us to today’s purpose:

    Why We’re Here

    We’re here to:

    • Analyze sustainability tools and global regulations

    • Propose strategies to implement these frameworks effectively

    • And understand how fashion can shift from linear waste to circular opportunity

    Defining Sustainability in Fashion

At its core, sustainability in fashion refers to practices and frameworks that reduce environmental harm and promote ethical labor across the lifecycle of a garment—from raw materials to end-of-life.

We'll explore standardized frameworks and ask:
    Why do regulations matter?

    Because:

    • They provide credibility

    • They create a shared language across global supply chains

    • And most importantly: accountability is no longer optional—consumers demand proof

    Key Frameworks

    1. Higg Index

An industry benchmark to measure environmental and social impact across the supply chain.

    • Scalable, comprehensive, fashion-specific

    • Costly, and sometimes lacks transparency

    2. ESG (Environmental, Social, Governance)

Focuses on climate change, pollution, labor practices, and business ethics.

    • Helps identify risk and unlock innovation

    • Builds trust with stakeholders and attracts conscious investors

    3. Cradle to Grave

Assesses a product’s lifecycle from raw materials to disposal, with a nod to circular economy—where nothing goes to waste.

    • Encourages regenerative design and fewer discarded garments

    Strengths and Challenges

    Strengths:

    • Higg: measurable, data-driven

    • ESG: widely understood and used at a governance level

    • Cradle to Grave: holistic and actionable

    Challenges:

    • Complicated global supply chains

    • Inconsistent data

    • High implementation costs, especially for small businesses

    Global Regulations Making an Impact

    In the EU:

    • Design for durability

    • Ban on hazardous chemicals

    • Extended producer responsibility (EPR)—brands must take responsibility for what they produce

    In the U.S.:

    • Fashion Sustainability and Social Accountability Act (NY): Requires large brands to disclose their environmental and labor impact, and meet science-based targets

    Certifications to Watch:

    • Cradle to Cradle Certified: Assesses garments on material health, carbon impact, and social fairness

    Industry Leaders

    Look to brands like:

    • Stella McCartney

    • Bombas

    • Prana

    • Everlane

    • GANNI

    • Allbirds

    And manufacturers like:

    • Brandix (eco manufacturing)

    • Ambercycle (repurposing polyester)

    • Circulose (recycling cotton)

    Final Thoughts

Sustainability is no longer optional, it’s imperative.

Success means shifting our mindset from waste to regeneration.
It requires innovation, collaboration, and education—from factories to governments to consumers like you and me.

So let’s go back to our opening question:

Is waste the endpoint… or the beginning of something better?

The future of fashion depends on how we answer that.

Let’s each commit to doing just 1% better today.
