Here I introduce myself to you and something of my journey into the world of willow weaving.
Here we look at what it is that we shall be making over though out this course and the way we can use scaling to adapt the technique to create the size of angel we want to make.
We look at the material of willow itself, with its many different varieties, specifically honing in on the difference between cultivated and "wild" willow.
Here we look at the use of jigs to define and control the shape of the angel while it is in construction.
In this video I talk about the selection of sticks, preparation of the ends and how to allocate them around the jig to ensure a strong and stable construction.
In this video, I talk about the selection of sticks to begin weaving the base and explain how to effectively execute the paired weave.
In this video we look at a different weaving pattern to use to complete the weaving of the base.
This video and the ones that follow are filmed from above giving a slow walk through of the pairing weave.
This video continues with the pairing weave, working with 2 pairs simultaneously.
This video continues with the pairing weave at normal weaving pace and looks at inserting the new sticks.
This video looks at a different type of weave that we use to finish off the top the base section.
The method for making the head is a wreath making technique, which one learnt can be scaled up to maker a larger wreath and is a really good way to get a solid understanding of the tolerances of willow as a material.
In this video we look at how one well chosen stick from the uprights is used to bind the head and body together at the neck to define the shape.
In this key video that establishes the wing size and shape for the angel, `I explain how to set and wrap the wings for a neat and secure tight finish.
Here we look at the careful selection of one of the uprights, which is used to create an integrated halo, adapting the wreath making technique used earlier.
Recap of the paired weave.
A recap of bringing down the wings and creating the spiral wrap.
This is a long video, taking you through from start to finish of the making of a medium sized angel. I hope it will serve as a means of reinforcing the learning of the making process.
This course is suitable for beginners. It is a step by step guide to using willow to weave up your own angel. There are repeat videos of some of the elements of the making process with close up filming and some videos shot from above to ensure a clarity of understanding of the techniques involved. The video covers the material of willow and gives some practical information about the sizes and variety of willow that you may have available to use. We consider jigs ( a construction used to set and position the sticks in order to create the framework) and how to construct simple ones to use in making these endearing creations..
You will be learning to make an angel and the course includes videos that cover the making of 3 different sizes. We look at some ways that the techniques can be varied to change the style and appearance of the angels. We look at ways of scaling the making of the angel and how we need to adapt the size and length of sticks accordingly. There is some advice on the finishing and display of these items, including ways to preserve them against the elements especially if they are going outside in all weathers.
The making of these is something that I have taught for many years at in-person events and is one of my most popular courses. I am sure you will love getting to grips with the techniques involved with the making of these angels.
