Welcome to Anatomy Amy Yoga, where we learn anatomy through the practice of yoga. In this course we will be learning 40 different common anatomical terms. These anatomical terms are important to know as you begin your anatomy learning journey, as they are the language in which anatomist speak about the human body.
You will start each section with an informational yoga practice used to teach the relevant anatomical terms. After that practice you will take a short quiz on the relevant terms. You can repeat the video practice as many times as you would like throughout the course.
The four sections are:
Anatomical Planes of Motion
Anatomical Terms of Location and Direction
Anatomical Terms of Motion
Anatomical Terms of Laterality
A yoga or exercise mat is recommended during the yoga practice videos.
Be sure to consult your doctor before starting any new exercise, including yoga. Also, be sure to listen to your body and avoid or modify any postures that cause you pain.
Time to clear a space for your first Anatomical Terms Yoga Practice.
In this video yoga practice we will learn how to identify the frontal or coronal plane, the sagittal plane, and the transverse plane. We will move through each of these planes in a simple yoga practice.
Following the video there will be a quiz.
Time for our next anatomically themed yoga practice; we will go over anatomical terms of location and direction.
Terms of location and direction are used to communicate clearly where something is on the human body, or in what direction you need to go to find something. These terms are always in reference to anatomical position, or mountain pose, which is how we will start today's practice.
In this practice we will go over terms of location and direction as they apply to human anatomy. For this video based practice you should change into comfortable exercise clothing and lay out your yoga mat (or something similar that will keep you from slipping). This is a 17 minute practice going over 16 different terms, I hope you enjoy!
You have gone over the planes that our bodies move through, and terms that help us communicate about where something is on the human body. Now we will move onto the anatomical terms of motion. These terms are used to describe the way in which our bodies move. These terms are developed in reference to anatomical position but used throughout all different types of movement.
Time for comfortable workout clothes again. In this 14 minute practice you will stay close to your mat as we go over 17 different anatomical terms of motion.
Here we are at the last full yoga practice video of the Anatomical Terms Course, nice work so far! In this practice you will learn anatomical terms of laterality. These terms are used to help describe the position or movement of a structure. We will go over these terms from an external perspective, however, they are also often used when speaking about internal matters like the location of organs and fetal development.
This is a six minute video that will focus on mat based core work while going over four anatomical terms of laterality.
There is a little less movement in this practice so a mat is great but a towel will work with no problems, any clothing that is loose around your middle and allows your legs to flex and extend should also work out well.
Note: If you find discomfort in your back during the first two movements of this practice try placing the palmar surface of your hands on your mat just under the superior portion of your butt.
Drop your stress and pick up a yoga mat! Prepare for anatomy by learning important anatomical terms. These terms are an important foundation for the study of human anatomy and kinesiology. Enter into your anatomy class a bit more prepared and ready to succeed by already knowing anatomical terms and concepts of anatomical planes of motion, location and direction, movement, and laterality.
The most exciting part? You don't have to spend all of your time just sitting at a desk studying, get comfortable with these terms while you join me in a simple yet challenging series of yoga practices designed to keep you well AND teach important anatomical terms for anatomy and/or medical terminology.
