Description
The "Introduction to Research Methods" course will provide you with a overview of the various research methods used when addressing a research question, including quantitative methods for analysing data, qualitative research, study design, literature review and how to write a scientific paper.
In this course, you will also learn about both quantitative and qualitative research and be taught basic statistical techniques. You will also be walked through the process of “study design” including an overview of the most important methods used by researchers. These include Cohort studies, Case-Control studies, and Randomised Control Trials. The course includes a chapter on how to do a good literature search and good literature review that is needed to inform both your research question and as part of the introduction to your report or paper. Finally, you’ll learn about how to write up your results so that they are ready to be published as a report or as a paper in an academic journal.
This course will be useful to anyone who is learning about research methods or doing research for the first time. The course is designed to ensure that you understand both the theoretical and the practical aspects of undertaking a research project.

Dr Greg Martin is a medical doctor with a Masters in Public Health and an MBA degree. His professional experience includes working as the Head of Science and Research at the World Cancer Research Fund and the Director of Elimination of Mother to Child Transmission at the Clinton Health Access Initiative. He is also the founder and Editor-in-Chief of the peer-reviewed journal Globalization and Health.
