Learn the key aspects of VoNR, including concepts, architecture, initial procedures, call establishment and interworking
Last updated 3/2025
English

What you'll learn

  • Determine the concepts and drivers for Voice over New Radio
  • Understand the architectural requirements for a 5G Voice over New Radio deployment, with focus on 5G access, IMS and PCC
  • Outline the initial procedures related to a device accessing VoNR services, including provisioning, IMS registration and post registration activities
  • Examine the overall call flow establishment mechanism for VoNR, covering the SIP signalling exchange, QoS Flows, codecs and call teardown
  • Consider interworking with other technologies, including handover, Wi-Fi Calling and Fallback

Description

As the rollout of Standalone 5G continues, operators are turning their attention to how voice services will be supported in a 5G environment. Like 4G, the answer lies in the deployment of IMS and as such, this course seeks to outline the main aspects of IMS based voice services over 5G New Radio, termed Voice over New Radio or VoNR.

The course will initially focus on setting the scent for VoNR, establishing the main concepts and drivers, including the work undertaken by the key standards bodies. Next, the course will outline the key architectural requirements for a VoNR deployment, covering the essential elements of the 5G New Radio access network, the IMS Call Control network and the Policy and Charging Control framework connecting the two. Initial procedures will then be discussed, outlining the steps a device needs to take in order to gain initial access to their voice services, including 5G access and IMS registration. Next, call establishment aspects will be examined, ranging from the codecs and media packetization used, through to a high level overview of the SIP message exchange. Finally, interworking with alternative voice networks will be covered, focussing on "legacy" voice services, as well as handovers, Wi-Fi Calling and EPS Fallback.

Who this course is for:

  • This course provides a concise overview of the key areas of 5G VoNR and as such would be beneficial to any technical or semi-technical individual who needs to broaden their VoNR knowledge
