Lecture Two. Meet Your Instructor
Check out ‘Amazon KDP Self Publishing: A Comprehensive A-Z How To Guide’ which I published previously on Udemy. The course is over seven hours long. It’s an overview of the entire self-publishing process.
In that course, I said I would create detailed follow-up courses on important steps in the author’s journey. This course is one of them.
‘Amazon KDP Self Publishing: Four Books From One’, shows you how to upload your manuscripts and book covers in four formats to Amazon.
Meet Your Instructor
Former assistant headteacher of a London secondary school.
Founder and CEO of an education company which worked with over forty schools in and around London, to raise educational achievement.
Self-published author of seven books.
Udemy instructor
Lecture Three: Get The Most Out Of The Course
Read the course notes, at the beginning, at the end or between the series of lectures. If you are a beginner, listen to all lectures.
I don’t think anyone who has succeeded in writing a book could be described as a hobbyist. One guestimate is that only a third of one per cent of those who set out actually reach their goal.
I have recommended paid solutions to challenges: Vellum, Atticus, BookBrush, Kindlepreneur and KDSpy. Your authorship is either an actual business or you approach it in a business-like manner. Consider purchases as investments rather than expenses.
If you have a question, I will acknowledge and hopefully answer it within 24 hours. If I’m unable to answer your question immediately, I will acknowledge it and get back to you within a given time frame.

Recap
Lecture Two. Formatting an ebook manuscript
Formatting a manuscript in Vellum or Atticus enables you to produce a professional-looking book. The software detects chapters and organises them. There are several elements or pages you can add such as ‘Copyright’ ‘Foreword’ ‘Also By’ etc. There are a number of pleasing fonts to choose from.

Lecture Three. Formatting a print book manuscript
Formatting a print book manuscript in Vellum or Atticus shares many of the same features as a ebook manuscript.
It enables you to produce a professional-looking book. The software detects chapters and organises them. There are several elements or pages you can add such as ‘Copyright’ ‘Foreword’ ‘Also By’ etc. There are a number of pleasing fonts to choose from.
However it differs in two respects. You will have to decide the books dimensions e.g. 6 x 9 and you have to make a note of the number of pages to create a print book cover in BookBrush

Lecture Four. Writing Blurbs for Novels
What is a blurb?
The blurb is the text that appears on the back of our paperback or hard cover book.
A blurb is a teaser. A hook. It is there to whet the potential buyer’s curiousity.
How do we write a blurb?
We could go to Amazon and find books in our genre and check out their blurbs.
We could search online for blog articles on ‘How to Write a Blurb’.
We could go to a book store and peruse hard cover and paperback books in our genre
What ‘Writing Blurbs for Novels’ covers.
Study blurbs of books in your genre

Lecture Five. Writing Blurbs for Short Story Collections
This lecture considers a blurb strategy, using genre tropes, for collections of stories where there will be many protagonists, settings and plots.
What is a trope?
A trope is a convention or device that establishes a predictable or stereotypical representation of a character, setting, or scenario in a creative work

Lecture Eight. Creating paperback book covers
This lecture explains how to create a paperback cover using BookBrush.
We will need our blurb, or our testimonials or a mixture of the two.
Because it’s a print book, it will have a spine, so we will add the title and author’s name to that.
The width of the spine will be determined by the number of pages in the Kindle Book format. We will have made a note of that when we created the print manuscript in Vellum.
What ‘Creating paperback book covers’ covers
Creating a paperback template for Amazon
Selecting genre book cover images
Adding our front and back cover matter
Lecture Nine. Creating hard cover book covers
This lecture explains how to create a hard cover cover using BookBrush.
What are the differences between a paperback cover and a hard cover?
There are two.
First, the hard cover spine is hinged. The paperback spine is not.
Secondly, the paperback cover is flush with the pages. The hard cover is not. There’s an overhang.
However, BookBrush has your back on this. So the set up is the same as for the paperback version.
You will have to place your cover artwork and text within a slightly tighter gridlines.
What ‘Creating hard cover book covers’ covers.
Creating a hard cover template for Amazon
Selecting genre book cover images
Adding our front and back cover matter
In this set of lectures, we looked at how to format our eBook and Print Book using Vellum
We worked on three ways to set up the back page of our print books: a conventional blurb for a novel, a blurb for a collection of short stories, and using testimonials as an alternative to a blurb.
In the final lectures we’ve looked at how to create covers for the eBook, paperback and hard cover versions of our book.
‘Act In Haste. Repent At Leisure’
The good news is that once we complete these three pages for uploading the ebook, most of what follows with uploading the paperback, hard cover and large print versions is relatively straightforward.
It’s vital to remain focused, take breaks if necessary, and work your way through methodically.

There are ten sections but seven of them are pretty much straightforward: Language, Book Title, Series, Edition Number, Author, Contributors, Publishing Rights, Age and Grade Range and Pre-Order
Nevertheless, we look at each in detail, because they are not completely straightforward.
The challenges are with Description, Keywords and Categories. I’ve included useful information about Categories in the next series of lectures on uploading a paperback. Otherwise, this lecture would be even longer than it already is.
If you methodically work your way through these three sections, you’ll be fine. The great news is that the hard work you put in here will be rewarded. The forms for the other versions of your book will be pre-filled.

A Step-By-Step Guide To Creating Your ebook, Paperback, Hard Cover and Large Print Books.
Who is it for?
Authors planning to self-publish their books, and who are at, or close to, the start of their author journey. Authors who understand the financial potential of having multiple formats of their book.
Everyone who aspires to write, whether they are just starting out or have a part-work gathering dust in a drawer or on a half-forgotten computer file. Whether they are retired or retiring soon and want to fulfil a long-standing ambition to write a book, or at the beginning of their writing career and looking to set up a solid foundation.
What does it cover?
By the time you complete the course, you will be able to self-publish perfectly formatted ebooks, paperbacks, hard covers and large print books versions of your book, in beautiful fonts, with eye-catching book covers and well-crafted blurbs.
Who buys print books?
Some readers, with a visual impairment, will be interested in the large print version. And this course will also show you how to create books specifically for people with dyslexia.
Some authors want physical copies of their books to sign at book launches and book events, for instance, in indie book shops. They give a talk, field questions and then autograph and sell their books directly to an appreciative audience.
Some readers simply prefer a physical copy of the book.
Surprisingly, some readers will buy your book in more than one format. Initially, they read it as an ebook, enjoyed it and decided to send it to a friend as a gift.
Why is this course the best?
The course is a comprehensive, well-organized, step-by-step guide that shows you how, with a little extra effort, you can turn your completed manuscript into four versions of your book for sale on Amazon. Each series of lectures is supported by notes: summaries, useful websites and resources.
Why will this information change or improve my life?
It will save you time. You will make mistakes on your author journey, for sure, but at least you can avoid making the mistakes I made. It will save you money. I made some costly blunders but I also made some good decisions in subscribing to particular sites.
Why should I care?
If you have a burning desire to share your stories, this course is a step-by-step blueprint to get you from A to Z. You will gain a huge sense of satisfiction in seeing your work in print. The hard work will have been worth it.
Why is now the time to learn this topic?
In my experience, and no doubt in yours, ‘Now’ is always the right time to start. You never know what’s round the corner. Start now and you will continue. Continue and you will complete.
Why are you the best teacher for this topic?
Not only am I a highly qualified teacher, but I also set up and ran a successful education company for many years. Thousands of students took the courses I wrote with very high satisfaction rates. I am also on my own author journey and have self-published several books. So with my background and experience, I am well-placed to deliver a hands-on course in a serious but engaging way.
Do you get excited about teaching the course?
Researching, writing, revising, recording and editing this course has been a labour of love. Fortunately, I love teaching. I have been a teacher all my working life. But what is most rewarding is the success of my students.
