Learn advanced hand hygiene practices to prevent infections in healthcare settings, understand transmission of microorganisms, and embrace the shared responsibility of patients, visitors, and professionals.
Explore the five sections of hand hygiene in healthcare, from basics and products to five moments, barriers, and quality assurance through protocols, audits, and training.
Learn what hand hygiene is and the three main methods: antiseptic soap and water, antiseptic hand rub, and surgical hand antisepsis, and its role in standard precautions and infection prevention.
Trace the origins of hand hygiene and its rise as an element of infection prevention. Follow the shift from non antimicrobial soaps to alcohol-based hand rubs between each patient contact.
Identify the hand hygiene formulations used in hospitals, including alcohol, chlorhexidine, chlorine, iodine, hexachlorophene, quaternary ammonium compounds, and triclosan. Prioritize 70 percent alcohol as the preferred agent.
Identify hand hygiene indications to interrupt pathogen transmission and reduce infections, and examine the WHO five moments, including before touching the patient and after body fluid exposure risk.
Determine soap and water versus alcohol-based hand rub use: wash when hands are visibly soiled or after exposure to C. diff or norovirus; use ABHR when hands are clean.
Surgical hand washing before surgery reduces microbial counts by scrubbing hands and forearms with antiseptic for 3–5 minutes, with upward water flow, jewelry removal, and drying with a sterile towel.
This course is intended to all the learners who would like to understand what hand hygiene is, who is the pioneer of hand hygiene, how and when to wash hands using soap and water and ABHR( Alcohol based hand rub) hand hygiene techniques, steps and products recommended for hand hygiene, the role of hand hygiene in prevention and control of health care associated infections, common barriers to hand hygiene and how to overcome these barriers, tools and templates used in hand hygiene data collection, audit types & techniques and how to make hand hygiene effective against disease causing agents. Hand hygiene is not only a matter of concern for health care workers but everyone is responsible for it, irrespective of the profession, as all of us some or other time in our life, visit the hospital for many reasons and hospital environment may carry these micro-organisms, but if you know the process of transmission through the hands, you can stop the spread of disease from hospitals to patients and to the communities.
Hand hygiene, if done as per the recommendations discussed in this course, can save the lives of millions of patients, who acquire infections from hospital during the course of disease and many of them die from these infections.
