
What is first aid?
First Aid includes:
Identifying the emergency
Calling for help if needed
Diagnosing the medical condition
Treatment and transport of the patient/injured person to the hospital for further assessment/treatment.
The “Triangle of Life” is a schematic diagram that presents the three main systems of the human body:
Nervous System (neurological)
Respiratory System (respiratory)
Circulatory System (cardiovascular)
The nervous system includes the brain and all the nerves in the human body. Its main function is to regulate all our actions – voluntary and involuntary.
The respiratory system is the system responsible for the exchange of gases in our bodies. As mentioned above, the system is responsible for bringing air into the bloodstream and the various organs of the body, and emitting unnecessary gases from the body such as carbon dioxide (CO2).
In greater detail, the respiratory system has two roles:
Ventilation – lets in oxygen-saturated air from the external environment into the lungs, and the removal of CO2-saturated air from the lungs out into the external environment.
Exchange of gases – ontroduction of oxygen from the lungs into the blood, and the removal of CO2 from the blood to the lungs.
The cardiac system is divided into three parts: pump (heart), pipes (blood vessels) and fluid (blood).
Introduction to patient evaluation
Demonstrates a stroke test by guiding the patient to talk, smile, close eyes, reach hands forward, and squeeze with both hands.
Learn how epilepsy can be hereditary or acquired, recognize petite mal and grand mal seizures, and provide safety steps: don’t restrain movement, protect the head, clear airway, call ambulance.
Understand how brain oxygen deprivation causes fainting and temporary loss of consciousness. Learn how raising the legs redirects blood to the brain.
Examine the respiratory system, from upper and lower airways to alveoli, and how airflow enables gas exchange. Learn how the diaphragm and intercostal muscles drive inhalation and exhalation.
Identify complete and partial airway obstruction and apply the Heimlich maneuver to relieve choking. Differentiate choking from drowning and recognize steps such as removal from water, oxygen, and hospital care.
Identify climate injuries from heat and cold, including dehydration, heatstroke, and hypothermia, with symptoms like thirst, rapid pulse, and high temperature, and learn when to rehydrate and seek hospital care.
Identify burn depth and skin layers, classify burns into levels one through three, and outline first aid steps to prevent infection, dehydration, and hypothermia.
Practice preventative measures around wildlife and treat unfamiliar animals as venomous, wearing long sleeves and sturdy footwear. If bitten, immobilize the limb and seek hospital care, avoiding cutting or tourniquets.
Master chest injuries part 1 within advanced first aid, covering essential CPR and choking response techniques and basic injury assessment.
Learn to immobilize an arm fracture using triangular cloths, place hand on chest, tie a double knot at the back of the neck, and secure ends around the ribs.
Immobilize a forearm fracture with two cloth splints. Place a cloth on forearm and wrap around elbow; pass a second cloth over the first and tie near ribs.
Demonstrates an ankle splint technique using a rolled cloth threaded through the shoe sole, crossing and tying around the ankle to stabilize a fracture.
Learn how to respond to earthquakes, identify crush injuries and crush syndrome, and apply safety steps and initial treatment to protect life.
Learn to apply a sterile head bandage by placing a pad on the wound, rubbing perpendicularly over the ear and under the chin to stop bleeding, securing with a clasp.
This course provides knowledge on how to perform basic life saving treatment to people without a medical background. There are many scenarios that may occur in one’s life time that will require emergency medical interventions. This course provides you with the skills and knowledge to engage in life-saving interventions if there are no qualified medical professionals in the vicinity.
This course starts by covering foundational aspects of emergency medical interventions, such as, a first aid introduction and basic anatomy and pathophysiology. This foundation is vital as it builds one’s knowledge and confidence when placed in a situation where life-saving medical intervention is necessary. By understanding what malfunctioned in the body and how the learned interventions can help alleviate or fix the problem.
Once the course leaders are confident in your understanding of the foundation they will begin to explain and demonstrate all the steps of emergency Cardiac Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR). This part of the course will ensure that you understand and can successfully perform each step.
At this point within the course, one will understand basic anatomy and physiology related to emergency interventions and will be competent in performing CPR. Next, the instructor will review the different medical emergencies that may occur, and the treatment that an unlicensed clinician can provide.
In addition, this course will cover Traumatic Injuries and how to treat them. The instructor will discuss how to approach each patient, the correct chronological steps of interventions, and the specific interventions for different injuries.
When you are finished this course, you will no longer be worried about not knowing what to do in the event of a medical emergency.
