Welcome to the Advanced 32nd Note Chops Course!
This video walks you through the 7-Step Method and explains the structure of the lessons in Section 1
Course Outline - Download the Course Outline for further more detailed information about the author/producer, background, lesson format and content.
Progress Checklist - Download the Progress Checklist to keep track of your progress throughout the course. Tick off each exercise you have completed and use a metronome to track your tempos. Make sure to play the patterns cleanly paying attention to the ghost notes and accents before you begin speeding the patterns up.
In this lesson you will learn how to play the ‘Funky Diddler’ 32nd Note Chop. This fill is very hand dominant and features significantly longer sticking’s than many of the other fills in this course. There is a 16 note mixed Paradiddle sticking in Phrase 2 as well as 11 and 9 note sticking’s in Phrases 3 and 4. The orchestrations within this fill are very satisfying to play as they flow very smoothly around the kit. The accents on beats 2 and 4 give the fill a groove like feel.
In this lesson you will learn how to play the ‘Brownish Bomber’ 32nd Note Chop. This fill features sticking’s of many different lengths, an even mix of single and double bass drum insertions and is predominantly left hand leading. The orchestrations are a little irregular and disjointed and feel a little bumpy throughout the end of phrase 2 and phrase 3.
Best of luck playing this fill at a high tempo!
In this lesson you will learn how to play the ‘Demisemi-Trailer’ 32nd Note Chop. This fill features five accented Single Paradiddles put together in various orchestrations. Phrases 1-4 link together well to create a pattern that is quite irregular but it still flows nicely around the kit at high speed.
In this lesson you will learn how to play the 'Big Kahuna’ 32nd Note Chop. This fill flows naturally around the kit and is predominantly right hand leading. Phrase 1 features two 7 note sticking’s (RLLRRLR) and Phrase 2 features a 6 note sticking (RRLRLL) with an accent in the middle. The fill is dominated by a 5 note sticking (RLRLL) which occurs five times throughout the sequence. There is also a left-leading sticking going down the toms in phrase 4 that can be a little awkward to play at high speed.
In this lesson you will learn how to play the ‘Bee’s Knees’ 32nd Note Chop. This fill features a range of different length sticking’s (10,5,7,6,7,6,5,2,3,2) separated mainly by single kick drum insertions. It features a high amount of double stroke ghost-notes and an interesting left leading 10 note sticking in phrase one. Watch out for the 6 note left leading sequence that flows down the toms at the end of phrase 3 as it can be difficult to play smoothly.
In this lesson you will learn how to play the ‘Brass Bandit’ 32nd Note Chop. This fill is predominantly right-leading except for the Paradiddle in Phrase 2. There are a high amount of snare drum ghost notes in this fill and the tom orchestrations flow very naturally around the kit. Watch out for the transition from the Hi Hat to the first tom in Phrase 4 as the left hand will need to come under the right.
In this lesson you will learn how to play the ‘Trojan Horse’ 32nd Note Chop. This fill features a left-leading Double Paradiddle sticking (LRLRLL) played down the toms incorporating the stacked cymbal in the middle. It also features two 6 Stroke Rolls and a series of shorter sticking’s.
This fill features a left leading (LRLR) cross-over pattern between the Hi Hat and the Floor Tom which is the same sticking used in the ‘4 Stick Cross’ Sextuplet Chop lesson from the previous course. Apart from being a great sounding chop, this fill will improve your skills around the kit using 32nd Note linear phrasing as well as develop your coordination inserting various kick drum notes within a pattern.
In this Lesson, you will learn to play the ‘Campion Classic’ 32nd Note Chop. This fill features a range of mixed sticking’s leading with the right and the left hand as well a mix of single and double bass drum insertions. This chop was written during a lesson with one of my students (Peter) where I was guiding him through the process of how I make up these fills. This is what we came up with during the lesson.
In this lesson you will learn how to play The ‘Big Rig’ 32nd Note Chop. This fill features a (RLRLL) five note sticking with the middle right played on the stacked Cymbal. This 5 note sticking is repeated five times throughout the fill and is separated by single bass drum insertions. The fill is rounded off by extending the 5 sticking into a 9 note sticking and adding a short orchestration around the toms.
In this lesson you will learn how to play the ‘Friday Fapper’ 32nd Note Chop. These 4 phrases combine nicely to make a unique fill with a few non-linear components. Phrases 3 and 4 feature a high amount of ghost notes and don’t involve any toms. Watch out for the stroke on the stacked cymbal on the second kick drum in Phrase 3 as well.
In this lesson you will learn how to play the ‘Para-Tripper’ 32nd Note Chop/Groove. This pattern is slightly different from the other chops in this course as it is more groove-based. It is predominantly right-hand leading and features a RLL sicking as well as various Paradiddle orchestrations. The pattern finishes with a more traditional style chop around the toms to transition back into the beat.
In the following 5 lessons, you will see examples of fills that I have created by combining 4 phrases together from the Phrase Banks. All you need to do now is pick out some phrases and arrange them in different sequences to challenge yourself. Make sure you choose and select your phrases carefully so you don’t create any awkward patterns like 3 or 4 right hands, left hands or kicks in a row. So to recap, your task is to practise the 5 combination fills I have given you and then start using the phrase banks to create fills of your own. I hope you start to see now that the possibilities for making new licks, fills and Chops sequences are endless.

In the following Section, you will learn to play five 3 Piece Linear 32nd note Fills. I created this section of the course to show that you don’t need to have a large and extensive drum kit in front of you to showcase your chops. I am finding that these days my gigging kit is getting smaller and smaller and is often reduced to just 3 pieces. Playing with three pieces is great because it makes you be more creative and forces you to make the most of what you’ve got.
By now, you should be getting faster at learning these fills so I am
going to fast-track these lessons and present them in only 4 steps
1. The Demonstration
2. 32nd Note Combination Exercise @ 60 BPM
3. 32nd Note Combination Exercise @ 80 BPM
4. The finished Product
In this lesson you will learn to play 3 Piece Fill no 2. This fill is very random and sporadic but concludes with eight and five note sticking’s to transition back into the beat.
In this lesson you will learn to play 3 Piece Fill no 3. It is another example of how to uniquely move between the 3 pieces using the Hi Hat to make the awkward movements more manageable.
In this lesson you will learn to play 3 Piece Fill no 4. Phrases 1 and 2 have a pocket chop feel accenting beats 2 and 4 and Phrase 3 repeats a pattern at different points within the bar. Phrase 4 has a bit of a down up down feel and all the phrases link together smoothly.
.
In this lesson you will learn to play 3 Piece Fill no 5. This fill features the stacked cymbal and is unusual because you play it with up down (RL) sticking’s and down up (LR) Sticking’s.
In this lesson you will see a collection of 10 Phrases that you can use as ‘go-to’ licks when you are improvising. These Phrases have been taken from the lessons in the previous section of the course. The phrases have been selected for this lesson as they sound great at high speeds, are unique and iconic, can be easily played in a variety of orchestrations and they loop well and have great flow.
Start slow and gradually speed them up.
Happy shredding!
I hope you have enjoyed the Advanced 32nd Note Chops Course. I have had a lot of fun creating it and have really enjoyed writing and recording these ideas. You’re at the end of this course now, but it’s really only the beginning because there is a lot more work to do. You can always play these fills, cleaner, faster and smoother and I hope you revisit this material over and over and have many hours of enjoyable and challenging practise ahead. It’s your job to take these ideas, make them your own, build upon them and work them into your game.
Congratulations and thank you for completing this course.
Sample Lesson - From Advanced Sextuplet Chops Online Course
In this lesson you will learn how to play the ‘Slick Slider’ Sextuplet Chop. This fill features a shrinking 9 note sticking pattern based on the 6 Stroke Roll that gets shorter by one note each time (RLLRRL RLL, RLLRRL RL, RLLRRL R). The fill also features 5 doubled Kick Drum strokes inserted throughout and finishes on the Crash and the Snare on beats 4 + to transition back into the groove. It is called the ‘Slick Slider’ because it slides down the toms twice throughout the fill and flows very smoothly around the kit.
