Explore why Adobe Illustrator is essential for vector graphics, using bezier curves, smooth paths, and infinite zoom to create logos, clip art, and typography for web and publications.
Navigate the illustrator interface by creating a document to view the workspace, panels, toolbars, and menus, then customize workspaces, use rulers, art boards, and the control panels.
Customize and manage Adobe Illustrator CC workspaces to tailor panels, tools, and layout for efficient workflows, save personalized setups like Jim's workspace, and reset to Essentials Classic when needed.
Save your Illustrator document locally or to the cloud, choose AI, PDF, EPS, or SVG while preserving vector quality, embedding fonts and ICC profiles.
Master the pen tool in Adobe Illustrator CC by creating precise bezier curves with anchor points and handles, converting points to smooth, and drawing circles through directional dragging.
Explore the pathfinder panel in Illustrator to turn basic shapes into complex designs by combining them with unite, minus front, intersect, exclude, divide, trim, merge, crop, outlines, and minus back.
Group and align shapes with the align panel, align to selection, key object, or artboard, then distribute for equal spacing and isolation mode to edit individual elements within a group.
Explore how the layers panel organizes shapes on the artboard in Illustrator CC, showing stacking order, layer colors, visibility, and locks; learn to create, rename, and manage layers.
Explore the intertwine tool in Adobe Illustrator CC to quickly weave overlapping vector elements and text by selecting objects and applying intertwine make with live previews.
Use rulers and guides with the info panel to place and align objects precisely by x and y coordinates, then fine-tune with the transform panel and smart guides.
Use transform and distort effects to create 15 rotated copies of an ellipse around the left anchor point, rotating 24 degrees each to form a flower and merge with Pathfinder.
Create and organize colors with the color panel and swatches, saving swatches as color groups and spot colors. Share color libraries via Creative Cloud to reuse color stories across projects.
Ungroup shapes, clear fills and strokes, and use the swatches panel to apply fills to each flower part. Explore color picker options, hue/saturation brightness, and out-of-gamut colors while adding swatches.
Learn to use the stroke panel to customize caps (butt, rounded, projecting), set dash patterns, adjust alignment, choose corners and joins, and refine stems with anchor point smoothing.
Apply linear, radial, and free form gradients using the gradient panel to add depth to vector shapes, adjusting color stops and swatches for a realistic 3D look.
Explore free form gradients to add realistic 3d shading and highlights by manipulating color stops and angles, swap colors on leaves and pot, and adjust light direction.
Discover how the generate vector feature uses AI and a text prompt to create editable vectors in Illustrator, then assemble backgrounds, foregrounds, and a floating cat with styles and effects.
Explore generative shape fill in Illustrator, drawing shapes and using a text prompt or automatic generation to create detailed flowers, then refine with variations and shape strength.
Use the character and paragraph panels to adjust font, size, leading, kerning, tracking; place text on a path, adjust justification and hyphenation, and explore baseline shift and glyph options.
Explore the brush panel in Illustrator CC, applying charcoal and decorative brushes to strokes, loading libraries like the elegant purple floral set, and experimenting with watercolor and scatter brushes.
Create a scatter brush from flower petals, then adjust size, spacing, scatter, rotation, and colorization to tints and shades, and draw along a path to see the floral pattern unfold.
Explore the blob brush tool in illustrator cc, painting solid shapes and merging them into one, versus the paint brush tool, to build a bumblebee illustration.
Use the illustrator effects menu to apply vector effects like drop shadows and inner or outer glows, compare with Photoshop’s raster effects, and adjust blend modes, opacity, and offsets.
Use the appearance panel to modify effects like drop shadows and adjust transparency on individual objects in isolation mode, including adding multiple fills and strokes.
Export artboards as web formats using export for screens or save for web legacy, naming artboards for file names. Choose PNG, JPEG, or GIF based on color depth and artifacts.
Learn to create a print proof in Illustrator by selecting the right artboard, enabling bleeds, trim and registration marks, color bars, and managing overprinting and output options.
Adobe Illustrator 2022 adds auto font activation from Adobe Fonts, a recolor artwork panel with color theme picker, text-based selection, and a 3D revolve with materials and ray tracing.
Adobe Illustrator is the premier drawing program used by artists and graphic designers to create vector images. In this introductory course, students will learn what Illustrator is about and when to use Illustrator. Students will learn how to use selection tools, create and save new documents, how to navigate, and how to use Adobe Bridge. In addition, students will learn how to create basic shapes, use drawing tools, master the pen tool, editing shapes, and using layers. Students will learn how to measure and transform objects, apply fills, strokes, and gradients, work with the CC libraries, and set type. Students will also learn to paint with brushes, apply special effects, and export to other file formats.
