Description

If you ever wanted to add a forum to your website, but thought it was either too costly or too complicated, think again.  This course will show you how to add a feature-rich forum to your Wordpress website using 100% free forum plugins.

Forums are centres of discussion between like-minded individuals, and your site can host it.  There are a lot of very good reasons why you should add a forum to your website.  These include:

  1. Build a thriving community where you can meet people interested in the topic of your website.  It's a great way to make new friends.
  2. Share your knowledge and learn from others. As the administrator of your forum, you'll enhance your credibility and become known as the expert in your field.
  3. Forum posts can be indexed by Google, so the members of your forum are actually creating content for you that can increase traffic to your site.
  4. As your forum grows, so does the authority of your site, and with it, the site rankings.
  5. A forum can reduce your workload, especially if you are providing support for something.  Other members will chip in and answer questions for you, and you can even have a frequently asked questions forum to post the answers to the most common questions.
  6. It's a great way to gather feedback from your members.
  7. You can put advertising into your forum.  Relevant adverts would be of interest to your members.

If I told you that you could set up a forum in less than 30 minutes, would you be interested in starting one?

This course will take you step-by-step through the entire process, THREE TIMES.

Yes, you heard that correctly.  I'll design a forum for a fictional software company, and then set it up using three different Wordpress forum plugins.  The reasons for showing you three different plugins is simply to give you a choice.  Do you want a comprehensive plugin, or a simple one?  I'll help you make the right decision on which plugin is best for you.

This course covers:

  • An introduction to forums and how they work.
  • Understanding permissions, forum groups and user groups.
  • Designing your forum.
  • The range of plugins available for setting up a forum.
  • The installation and setting up of three different forum plugins.

For each plugin. we'll:

  • Explore the user interface.
  • Check out any demo forums and usergroups the plugin installed as an example, before deleting everything so we can start from scratch designing our own forum.
  • Take the forum we designed earlier, and recreate the forum with the plugin.
  • Add forums.
  • Add usergroups if necessary.
  • Add and check permissions.
  • Explore the process a visitor goes through when registering for your forum, and how you can then move that member to a specific usergroup depending on which forums you want to give them access to.
  • Look at post moderation.
  • Quickly run through the important options and settings for the plugin.

By the end of this course, you will have a fully functional, feature-rich forum.  If you have any problems or questions as you go through the course, I am here to personally help you.  You are never on your own when you take one of my courses.  So what's stopping you?  Sign up today, and create that community forum you always wanted.

Who this course is for:
  • If you own a Wordpress website and want to add a forum.
  • If you want to increase conversations and interactions on your website.
  • If you want to learn about the different forum options for a Wordpress website.

+ Forum basics
7 lectures 21:55

This introductions to forums will show you what they are, why they are useful, and a few of the options you have when you set them up.

Preview 03:53

Understanding user groups and permissions is vital to creating a well-organised, useful forum.  This lecture discusses these important ideas.

Preview 05:30

Forum groups are simply groups of related forums that we can assign user permissions to.  This lecture looks at forum groups, and how they can work with permissions.

Forum groups
03:01

Before installing a forum plugin, we need to plan out the forum.  This lecture will introduce the demo forum that we will be creating in this course.

Designing your forum
02:48

There are a number of forum plugins you can use and I am going to tell you about three of them.  You will ultimately need to decide which to use, but armed with the advice in this lecture, the choice should be simple enough.

Which forum plugin
04:55

If you are going to allow visitors to register for your forum, then you need to check a Wordpress setting.  This lecture shows you the setting.

Wordpress settings change

Before you begin the course, I'd love to know a little more about your background, and why you want to add a forum to your Wordpress website.

Pre-Course Question

+ Setting up a forum with Simple:Press
10 lectures 56:33

The Simple:Press forum plugin is not in the plugin repository.  You need to download it from the author's website.  This tutorial shows how to get the plugin and install it.

Installing Simple:Press
04:42

The forum for Simple:Press may look complicated, but everything is organised in a logical way.  I'll show you a quick overview of the interface in this video.

The interface
04:52

In this lecture we'll look through the demo data installed with Simple:Press.

Pre-installed samples
09:13

When we deleted the sample data in the last lecture, not everything was actually deleted.  Simple:press kept some of the important stuff there to help you.

Starting from scratch
01:13

We are now ready to start creating forums.

Adding the forums
08:39

In this lecture we are going to check out the forum and make sure permissions are all correct.

Checking permissions
05:04
The registering process
05:28

We have set up the forum so that registered users are seen as customers.  This may not be the case because anyone can register.  This tutorial shows how we can fix that by creating a Customer group and moving legitimate customers across to that group.  We also need to adjust the permissions on the Customer only forums.

Customer Only Group
05:12

The way we set up the guest poster in an earlier video could cause spam problems in the forum.  It is much better to moderate guest posts, and this tutorial will show you how to moderate guest posts.

Moderating posts
06:52

This lecture goes over a few useful features found in the Simple:Press menu.

Quick run-through of the options
05:18
+ Setting up a forum with Asgaros
8 lectures 27:24

Asgaros is the second forum plugin we are going to look at in this course.  This one is a simple, easy to configure forum and is ideal if you want something quick and easy to administer. In this lecture, we'll install it.

Installing Asgaros
01:03

In this lecture we'll take a quick tour of the interface of Asgaros forum plugin.

The interface
05:01

The Asgaros doesn't actually install much by way of an example.  This video will look at what is there and give you clues to how this simplified forum works.

The pre-installed example
01:09

In this lecture, we setup the forum structure for the Asgaros forum.

Adding the forums
03:50

In order to restrict access to certain forums we need to set up permissions.  This lecture looks at how to do that, and discusses a limitation compared to the Simple:Press plugin we saw previously.

Checking permissions
05:27

This lecture looks at the process of registering for the forum, and then making those registered users "Customers".

The registering process
05:18

You can assign users as forum moderators.  These people have special privileges which we will look at in this tutorial.

Forum Moderators
00:57

This final lecture in the Asgaros section briefly looks at the settings for the forum, including the option of auto-posting new blog posts to a forum.

Quick run-through of the settings

+ Setting up a forum with wpForo
8 lectures 38:18

wpForo is a comprehensive forum plugin.  In this tutorial, we'll install it.

Installing wpForo
01:05

wpForo has a great user interface.  Let's have a quick look around.

The interface
05:19

wpForo installs a simple forum as an example, so this lecture looks at that.  It also has a quick look at usergroups and how permissions are assigned.

The pre-installed example
06:24

In this lecture we will clear out the demo forum, and start to build the one we designed earlier in the course.

Adding the forums
06:37
Checking Permissions
08:07

When guests post, they need to be moderated before they appear in the forum.  This lecture shows how moderation works.

Moderation
03:52

The wpForo forum plugin has the easiest and most streamlined registration processes of all plugins we have seen so far.  This lecture takes you through that process.

The registering process
02:41

The wpForo plugin does have a lot of settings you can play with, and in this video, we'll look at the most important ones to get you started.
