Description
Want to get started in the acting industry, but don't know where to start? Auditions, agents, headshots and demos; it can be intimidating.
WHAT IS ACT ONE?
Act One aims to demystify the process.
In this 3-hour course, we will cover a multitude of topics and educate you on how things work. With examples of marketing materials, guidance on how to get on-set experience, and even a section on the Canadian actors union ACTRA, we want you to leave with all the information you need to get into the business. Whether you want to be a film actor, compete for high-paying commercial gigs, or hear your voice in the next AAA video game, you need to understand what to expect, and what's expected of you.
WHAT IS ACT ONE NOT?
What you will not find in this workshop are promises.
Acting is not easy, and the business of it is at times even harder. Any workshop promising you success is lying. Making a successful career requires hours and hours of practice, unpaid auditions, outreach and constant updating of your materials. And even then, many will never land a lead role in a major film or television show.
But if you have the undeniable urge to give this craft a shot, and are ready to work your butts off, it can create some of the most rewarding and memorable experiences.
This is also not an "acting course". I have taught acting workshops in my Montreal studio, but this is first and foremost a workshop about everything else: consolidated information and guidance on the process of becoming a professional, auditioning actor.
ARE YOU READY?
If you're still reading, and the work doesn't scare you, join me as we get you ready to chase those nagging dreams. And as always, I tried my best to make some silly jokes along the way.
Who this course is for:
- New actors who want to understand how the industry works and first steps on how to get started.
Instructor
Julian Stamboulieh, born and raised in Montreal, began his media career as an actor and a freelance video editor in 2004. After receiving his BFA in Photography from Concordia University, he soon found himself in his directorial debut.
ACTING
With credits in TV, commercial and voice, Julian embodies what he teaches: he does not pass up any opportunity or medium to advance his career, pay his bills, and enjoy his craft.
While having experience on camera, most of Julian's work is in the sound booth. With video game credits such as Monster Hunter Stories, Lost Records: Bloom & Rage and SaGa: Emerald Beyond, he is thrilled to be involved in the industry that he has nerdily been addicted to since childhood. Montreal is not only a hub for gaming, but for dubbing as well. Having dubbed 50+ projects, you can find his voice on the English audio of Alice In Borderland, Vincenzo, Dale Gas, and so many more foreign Netflix projects.
Julian also sits on ACTRA Montreal's council as an elected official, where he represents his city's performers and chairs the Young Emerging Artists Assembly (YEAA). The committee's mandate is to create community, events and workshop opportunities for new actors.
DIRECTING
In 2013, Julian created and directed the digital series LARPs, with both seasons acquiring 10+ international awards and 4+ million views. He has gone on to direct several short films, including Dystonia, The Forest, and Okay Boomer, all of which can be found on the webpage of his company Beanduck Productions.
Through Beanduck, Julian prioritises fan integration and engagement; the success of LARPs demonstrated the importance of not simply telling a story to a community, but with a community. With social awareness central to its beliefs, all Beanduck productions aim to have gender parity and diversity on its productions, and high environmental standards on its sets.
TEACHING
Julian has designed and taught several workshops at a number of different institutions. From on-camera acting to improv, directing & producing to editing, he has instructed a range of students across the age and experience spectrum. He also creates filmmaking basics & how-to videos on his YouTube channel "The Nerdy Filmmaker".
