Welcome to painting with Autumn Toñita! In this first lecture, you'll find out more about this project, what you'll learn, and how much fun we're going to have together- right here in my home studio in Cozumel, Mexico. If you've never painted before, don't worry because I'm here for you every step of the way.
In this lecture, you'll learn just how easy it is to choose your colors- no fancy or expensive paints needed. Just look for a variety of colors that you love! Check the Resources in this Lecture to see the paint colors I use for this painting. Remember, it's not important to find the exact brand or color that I use- it's the vibe that you're going for.
In this lecture, you'll learn how to choose your canvas- the type and size. The canvas we use for this course is 50 X 60 cm or about 20 X 23 inches. You don't have to use exactly this size, but I do recommend at least this size or slightly bigger. You just want to make sure that your image fits!
In this lecture, you'll learn what types of supplies you need. This includes some texturing tools like paint spatulas, forks, or foam sponges. You'll also want something to catch paint drips, a rag to dry brushes, water, paint brushes, and more. Check the resources in this lecture for a complete checklist.
In this lecture you'll learn the importance or non-importance of an easel, and offer you some options if you don't have or don't want to use one.
Setting up your environment is super important. In this lecture, I'll share the most important things to keep in mind when setting up your painting space. These things include where to be, whether to sit or stand, what kind of music to listen to, how to set up lighting, what to wear, and how to be comfortable. I'm also including a Spotify playlist that I created just for you- the link is in the "Environment Checklist" in the Resources of this lecture.
In this lecture, we'll talk about what to do if drawing on large surfaces is a chalenge.
In this lecture, we'll look at the images I use for this painting and how you can get them. Click on the Resources button to download the original image, the image with an artsy filter, and the traced version of the image.
In this lecture, you'll learn how to make your own tracing table, and how to trace your image onto a blank piece of printing paper- first with pencil, then with Sharpie marker. Then we'll trace the image from the paper to the piece of plastic. The video will speed up during the times I'm tracing, so while it looks like it only takes about 5 minutes, each section took me around 20 minutes in real-time, so pace yourself and don't feel like you have to rush. Since there won't be much talking during the tracing times in the videos, feel free to crank up your music while you trace- it helps you to stay focused and in a good vibe!
In this lecture, I'll show you how to make your own box projector from common household items. Be sure to check your Box Projector Supply Checklist in the Resources of this lecture to make sure you're prepared!
In this lecture, I'll show you how to place your image onto the box projector and secure it with tape. Remember that you'll want to flip the drawing so that when the image is projected from inside the box, it isn't backward.
In this lecture, we'll set our projector on a flat surface and use our light source to project the image up onto the canvas. You can hang the canvas or prop it up against the wall, and situate the projector level with the canvas.
In this lecture, I'll show you how to paint the outlines onto the canvas. You'll want to do this in the dark or in a dark place for best results. You'll finally see your image on the canvas for the first time, so this is an exciting step! The video is sped up while I paint the outlines, so while this video is about 6 minutes long, it took me about 20 minutes to complete in real-time, so take your time and don't feel like you need to rush. Since there's not a lot of explaining in this video, feel free to keep that music playing!
In this lecture, we'll go over which area to paint first and why, as well as pick our paint colors for the first area.
In this lecture, we'll pour out the paint colors we'll use for the sky.
Here, we'll paint the background of the canvas- the sky. Get ready to learn a fun brush stroke and add dimension with a texturing tool and a couple of tricks.
In this lecture, we'll learn how we're going to paint the church building and pick our colors.
Now, we'll pour out the colors that we'll use to paint the church.
In this lecture, we'll paint the church building together, step by step.
Now that we've painted two of the main elements, let's take a look at our progress. In this lecture, we'll learn what to do if we're at a stopping point and how to choose where to go from here.
In this lecture, we'll go over the technique we'll use for painting the doors, windows, and openings of the church. Instead of a brown or black, we'll blend colors to make these spaces more mystic and less dark.
Now we'll pour the paint we need for the doors, windows, and openings of the church.
In this lecture, we'll paint the doors, windows, and openings together.
In this lecture, I'll talk about the technique we'll use for the stained glass windows. During the day, it's hard to see them (so they're not noticeable in the original photo) but at night, they're lit up from the inside, reflecting beautiful orange and green colors. We'll also learn how to paint the church bells.
Now let's pour the paint colors we'll use for the stained glass windows and the church bells.
In this lecture, we'll paint the stained glass windows together.
In this lecture, we'll paint the golden church bells. If one of your bells is uneven, too big, or too small, I'll show you how to correct the size and shape without re-drawing them.
In this lecture, we'll learn how to paint the palm trees, the technique we'll use to give them movement and life, and all the fun colors we'll use.
Now, we'll pour the paint colors we need for the palm trees.
In this lecture, we'll paint the green palm trees together. There's a pretty strong Caribbean rainstorm going on in the background of the first couple of minutes, but I hope it's a soothing sound for you. After that, it's smooth sailing.
In this lecture, we'll use a texturing tool to give the palm trees lots of fun colors to make them feel alive.
This is a super quick intro to the next step- the church steps!
Now we'll pour the beige color we need to paint the steps of the church.
In this lecture, we'll paint the steps of the church together. Then we'll work on the cross walk and give it a big punch of color.
In this lecture, we'll go back over the church bells and stained glass windows for some detail enhancement.
In this lecture, we'll go over the techniques and colors we'll use for the grass and the road in front of the church.
Now we'll pour the paint we'll use for the grass and the road.
In this lecture, we'll paint the grass and the road together.
In this lecture, we'll talk about how we're going to work on the details with black, white, and grey paint.
Now we'll pour the paint for the outlines and details.
In this lecture, we'll paint the white outlines and details of the church together.
In this lecture, we'll work on the black outlines for some bold definition. You'll really see your painting pop after this step!
In the final lecture of this section, we'll add some fun highlights and finishing details together.
Let's take a close up look at our painting!
You've finished a painting! Congratulations! In this lecture, I offer some final notes.
Colorful, vibrant, fun, and playful- that's how I like my paintings to feel. And I love sharing this style because truly anyone can do it, and each piece is as unique as its creator. With a few basic acrylic painting supplies and a bit of preparation, you can complete a painting in less than a day! Or take as long as you like.
In this acrylics painting course, I'll show you how to set up your environment, how to choose your colors, how to paint with textures and dimensions, and have FUN throughout the process. If you have a hard time drawing images, don't worry- I'll even teach you how to trace the image with a homemade tracing table and how to project the image onto the canvas with a homemade projector- both made from items you already have around your home.
I'll share all of my images with you in case you don't want to trace them yourself. I'll also include Downloadable Checklists so you can be fully prepared before you begin your acrylic painting.
This course includes lots of tips and tricks- from how to hold your brush to how to add excitement and surprise to your canvas. Even if an image only has a few colors in it, I'll show you how to paint the way a place feels instead of how it looks on a flat piece of paper. If you're interested in having fun while you paint, this course is for you.
So join me here and see what you can create with a few basic supplies, an open heart, and a little curiosity!
