Create beautiful, loose, colorful abstract acrylic painting. Using brushes, rollers and lots of thick, luscious, juicy acrylic color.
This course is for beginners who want to know a lot about acrylic painting. This lesson is perfect or those with minimal experience, but if you have been painting with acrylic for a while you might learn something new too!
Why acrylic paint? acrylics yield some of the most gorgeous colors and ingenuous results. In addition to being incredibly easy to use acrylic is quite inexpensive, and this means you can create luscious textures in your abstract painting
Acrylic paints (Amsterdam): white, turquoise, blue, yellow, brown, neon pink
Squared stretched canvas, bigger is always better.
Palette knife, big flat brush, small flat bush
Gold foil (the cheap kind), glue for the foil (if the art supply store doesn’t have it, just dilute some white glue with 30% water), paper towels (cleaning up the brushes)
Using yellow and white acrylic paint you will start your wonderful journey of acrylic painting.
Using a big flat brush you will create a section of color at the top of the canvas.
Keep in mind that this is the under-painting this will serve as general color and it will show up about 5% in the finished abstract painting.
Nonetheless this is a very important layer, not in the way that it looks, but rather that it covers the white of the canvas so that the entire top of the canvas has a layer of Acrylic Paint.
This layer of acrylic paint will be the building block of all the textures you will apply in the next steps, to create the abstract painting
The palette knife isn’t just a tool for mixing acrylic paint on your palette. Many artists abandon paint brushes altogether in favor of the semi-flexible blades to create abstract paintings that are full of rich texture and sweeping blends of color.
You can paint on top of wet layers of acrylic paint without having to worry about the paint blending (like it does with your brush).
The palette knife can be fantastic for blending edges by dragging one color into another to create an amazing abstract painting.
Learning to paint with a knife can be a tricky skill to master, however in this course you will learn easy ways to apply satisfying textures of Acrylic paint to create an abstract painting
You can quickly scrape away the acrylic paint from the canvas to clear an area where it went wrong. Keep in mind there are no mistakes in abstract painting, only happy accidents.
Hold the handle firmly with your thumb on top and use your wrist to change angles on the canvas, and leave your mark on the world.
If you like the course so far, a review would help tremendously.
You can also use the palette knife to scrape details into your abstract painting, you just need to be aware of what color will be exposed in the under-painting.
Because the palette knife allows you to paint layer on layer without having the acrylic paint blend together, you can achieve some beautiful broken color effects which are not possible with a brush.
Use painting knives to create expressive abstract paintings that appear to come out from the canvas.
You want all the elements in your abstract painting to work together.
The palette knife is great for sharp shifts in color. For example, if you want to add a layer of acrylic paint .
But also if the shift in acrylic color is subtle this will create a softer transition and contrast to the abstract painting.
Using Some gold foil glue, or some diluted white glue with 30% water, you should create a bridge of glue where the top of the canvas meets the lower part.
Its very hard to visualize the line so you can find a picture of the finished abstract painting bellow.
The acrylic paint textures underneath will show up in the gold foil.
This is a very easy step of the abstract painting, all you need to do is apply the gold foil over the glue.
If you feel like you want to put more acrylic paint textures, fell free to do so.
Removing the excess gold foil can be done with a brush or just your hand gently going over the abstract painting.
The acrylic painting is now done, all it needs is some varnish, and you will see exactly how in the next step
Varnish is very good for protecting the gold foil and making the acrylic paint more vibrant.
Use a water-base varnish on your abstract painting, it can be even a spray varnish.
Congratulations, you are now the proud creator of an amazing abstract acrylic painting.
Thank you for being part of the community, if its not to much to ask, a review will help a lot.
Your experience and opinions about the course are very important.
This course is for beginners, and not only, who want to know more about acrylic painting. In this class you will learn techniques on how to make large abstract paintings with various acrylic paint and gold leaf. You are encouraged here to use your free hand, create new patterns and satisfying textures.
Acrylic paint , white, turquoise, blue and yellow, 250ml to 500ml each
Stretched canvas, bigger is always better
Paint roller and paint scraper
Small flat brush and big flat brush
Palette knife
Diluted white glue
Gold leaf. The cheap alternative
Willingness to have fun and experiment
This is the perfect medium for creating modern paintings with graphic color blocking, thick texture, and delicate lifework. In this video you will learn about how to use a roller to speed up the process of covering all the canvas,
For this abstract acrylic painting, you will need white and turquoise, you are going to apply this paint with the roller. You are going to make sure that you cover the corners as well as the edges. You will learn how to play with the colors and blend them.
For the third step of this abstract acrylic painting, you're going to use some turquoise and some yellow to lay down some color on the bottom side of the painting, going down and sideways to fill a hole down side of the painting, starting from the white you just laid in. It is quite interesting to see those layers blend.
For the fourth step of this abstract acrylic painting, you're going to use some green, some blue and some turquoise to make a darker green and the paint scraper. You are going to lay some textures, some pillars over the white we laid in the second step. Make some shapes, play with the textures and colors.
Continuing the abstract acrylic painting, take some turquoise and some white making a color a little bit more white than the one you laid in the third step, and we just go with textures over the greens, over the turquoise, just laying down with the scraper.Just laying down textures, making this a little bit more three-dimensional going down with the textures, going sideways, just making a real beautiful mess of textures.
For the six step of the abstract acrylic painting, going to lay down some of that white with turquoise on the down side with the roller just white and a little bit of turquoise, leaving a little bit of spaces where the paint should be untouched and then going down, covering the bottom of the canvas and going fast, going on the left side, on the right side.
For the step number seven of the abstract acrylic painting, this step is completely optional, if you do not want to make it, it's not going to affect the finished painting. We're just going to put a little bit of gray on the top side of the painting. A little bit of gray just here and there, putting it on the top side and a little bit on the lower side.
In the continuation of the abstract acrylic painting, you are going in with the whites over the top part, will be a little bit more intense than the first white we laid down, Just because it's just pure white, put those layers and building a little bit of interesting shapes with the palette knife, make smaller shapes for give this impression very hard to make this painting, which is not it's quite easy.
In the making of the abstract acrylic painting, you are going to use for the first time the brush. You're just going to use over the white you just laid and just brush it in a little bit, over the top. Don't press too hard just over the top to make it smooth and nice, but remember to keep a little bit of texture you just laid in.And you can also, if you want, go over the greens as well and make them more interesting with the white paint you have in your brush just going a little bit over the greens.
For this next step of the abstract acrylic painting, you are going to get in with that white once again on the top to build a little bit more interest and more dynamic shapes softly with the palette knife. You're going to start from the top and lay the paint just over the paint that is at the top of the painting. Going slowly so you can control the shapes.Making those shapes even more interesting, building those layers and those textures so that they look amazing and complicated, that they look like ice.
In the continuation of the abstract acrylic painting, you're going to use some of that white with some of that turquoise and a little bit of blue.To work on the bottom side of the painting with the knife, you're just going to make this beautiful, interesting and intricate texture. Make a layer of texture where you accentuate the background and make it more dynamic. You don't have to think too much about it, just put in color and see what happens and learn from it a little bit and then put a little bit more color. And you can just play and dance and have fun.
For the next step of the abstract acrylic painting, you're going to use the beautiful roller with the same paint we just made, the blue and the white and a little bit of turquoise, and we're just going to lay down and connect the bottom of the painting with the texture we just created.Roller is just interesting, it just keeps everything so much more dynamic and so much more nice, just build those layers, feel free to experiment a little bit and getting a little bit more paint.
For the next step of the abstract acrylic painting, You're going to put the white glue that the diluted white glue put some into a paper plate. Keep in mind, this is on the ground, we are on the ground and we're just going to lay like a big line in the middle of the painting just like that. The idea is to make like a passageway from one side of the painting to the other. But just break it a little bit, have it have it parts where it's full, parts where it just disintegrates. To apply the glue, just apply it with the small brush, you can also use the big brush, it doesn't really matter and you can just put a certain on the edges of the line of this.
Go on with the abstract acrylic painting, you will apply gold leaf.Remember, we're going to need to let the white glue dry a little bit. After, you will put all the beautiful, wonderful gold leaf over the small pockets of white glue and the line in the middle let her dry, and then we're going to brush it off the parts that are not not connected to the glue and the edges and stuff like that, so don't worry, if we go over the edge, you don't have to apply it exactly where the glue is. And you're just going to have to apply it a little bit more than the glue, so you have a little bit more gold leaf on the sides of the glue and on the edges.Don't worry if it sticks to your hands, if it sticks to your fingers, it's easy to wash.
In the next step of the abstract acrylic painting, one hour or half an hour should have passed to let the glue dry. You're going to get a brush and just brush out the excess gold foil, just going back and forth. Don't press it too hard, just a little bit.Just where you can see that there is no glue underneath. just brush it out really, really fast and not touching almost at all the gold leaf.
Continuing the abstract acrylic painting, we're just going to have some white, some blue and some turquoise with the palette knife on a plate. You're just going to make holes on the gold leaves. Just breaking down that that those those edges that look a little bit too perfect, making them a little bit more interesting. You can you can connect those shapes and make more textures and make it more interesting. It is a distant lands in the in the ocean of ice, really is quite interesting how it started to look.Just putting it in more texture and more of this wonderful new ice, a new color.
Come in a joyful journey of the abstract painting. You will be using brushes, palette knife, gold foils (cheaper than gold ones but same effect as real ones) and great thick luscious acrylic paints. There is something cathartic about abstract painting. You can dive into it as a meditation, for inspiration and even art therapy benefits.
