  • Downloading Ableton Live. Which version is right for you?7:39

In this video tutorial, we'll guide you through the process of downloading and selecting the right version of Ableton Live, ensuring a smooth start to your music production journey.

To begin, head over to the Ableton website. You'll find the Live section conveniently located in the top left corner. Click on "Live" to access the Live webpage.

Here, you'll discover a wealth of informative videos and tutorials that cover many aspects we'll explore in this course. It's a good idea to revisit this page periodically, as it's regularly updated.

Now, the fantastic news is that before making a purchase, you can try Ableton Live for free for a generous 90-day trial. Look for the "Try Live for Free" option in the top right corner of the page. This trial is available in three versions: macOS Universal, macOS Intel, and Windows 64-bit, catering to different systems.

During the trial period, you'll experience Ableton Live 11 Suite, the most comprehensive and feature-rich version. It's a fantastic way to explore the software's capabilities before making a commitment.

Before proceeding, let's glance at the system requirements. While Ableton Live 11 can run on a system with a minimum of 8GB of RAM, we recommend having 16GB, especially if you plan to engage in MIDI-intensive tasks. More RAM will ensure smoother performance.

Disk space is another consideration. Though the minimum requirement is 3GB, we suggest having at least 8GB. As a best practice, it's wise to use an external solid-state drive to store your sessions, samples, and packs, preventing any potential issues caused by saving sessions on the same drive as the program.

Now, if you're ready to purchase Ableton, click on "Buy Now" on the Live page. You'll find several options:

    1. Live 11 Intro - $74 (on sale from $99)

    2. Live 11 Standard - $337 (on sale from $449)

    3. Live 11 Suite - $562 (on sale from $749)

As we progress through this course, we'll primarily focus on Live 11 Suite, given its comprehensive features. However, if budget constraints are a concern, consider starting with Live 11 Standard, which still offers an extensive range of tools.

Here's a pro tip: If you happen to have a MIDI controller that came with an Ableton Live Lite license, you can register that license and enjoy even greater discounts on Live 11 Standard or Suite.

Once you've made your selection and purchased Ableton, your serial number will be stored in your account. You can switch between licenses and download the version you've chosen. Additionally, you can authorize an Ableton Push controller if you have one.

Lastly, within your account, you'll find access to packs, where you can download additional content to enhance your music production capabilities.

Now that you've set the stage by downloading and selecting your Ableton version, in our upcoming lessons, we'll delve deeper into the world of music production with Ableton Live. Stay tuned for more insights and guidance!
