Course content

2 sections9 lectures50m total length
  • An Introduction to Shamatha Meditation - #1, The Body10:48

In this first introductory video, Shamatha Meditation - Mindfulness & Gentleness, Frank Berliner introduces the foundational practice of Tibetan Buddhism.  Berliner refers to renowned Tibetan Buddhist scholar and lineage holder, the Ven. Chögyam Trungpa Rinpoche (1940-1987), who founded the Naropa Institute (now Naropa University) in 1974. He was enormously influential in spreading the teachings of Tibetan Buddhism to the West, authoring dozens of books and establishing the Shambhala Training program and Shambhala International, a global association of meditation centers.

  • Introduction to Shamatha Meditation - #2, The Breath10:11

In this second introductory video, Frank discusses the importance of the breath as a focus of attention in meditation practice.

  • The Journey From Peaceful Abiding to Wisdom1:51

Frank Berliner introduces the meditation practices in the Buddhist tradition that have emerged from the foundation of Shamatha.  These practices include Loving Kindness, Compassion, Insight and Wisdom.

  • Relative and Ultimate Truth1:12

Outlines the three main areas of Buddhist meditation:

    • Practices that open and soften the heart (relative truth)
    • Practices that provide penetrating insight into the nature of reality (ultimate truth)
    • Practices that join the first two
  • Loving Kindness and Relative Truth5:21

Focus on the practices that soften and open the heart, the practices of relative truth.  These are referred to in this way because they have a direct impact on how we relate to other people in the course of our lives.

  • Compassion and Suffering5:19

On overview of compassion, which brings mercy into our practice.  Where as Love is the wish that others be happy, Compassion is the wish that others not suffer.

  • Penetrating Insight6:20

The practice of Penetrating Insight is also referred to as Vipasyana.  This is the meditation on the Ultimate Truth, on the mind beyond thoughts and concepts.  Shamatha practice is also the foundation for this practice.

  • Wisdom - Joining Compassion with Penetrating Insight4:28

A reflection on the joining of love and compassion with penetrating insight - the practice of wisdom.  Making the distinction between knowledge and wisdom.  Only if knowledge is guided by compassion, is it truly useful wisdom.

Requirements

  • Students simply need an open heart, an open mind, some curiosity about meditation practice and 25 free minutes.
