When you have viewed this video, you will have had the essential content of the course explained by the cast of Overcoming Sadness – me, Dr Jeff Gordon, and the six avatar actors who help present the course content.
This is a course of exploration to help you understand and manage the psychological causes of chronic sadness. It is a journey in which you will learn to identify psychological models that underlie our emotional states, specifically chronic sadness.
In this video, I suggest there are three different reasons that people might be taking this course: experiencing sadness, or has a friend or loved one who is experiencing sadness, or just curiosity about the psychology of this particular mood state. You can determine which of these three you are, so you can start to focus your inquiry on what you want to get from the course. After the video, perhaps start a journal of the insights you have gained and the interventions you find most interesting. Be an active, inquiring learner.
To make the videos less reliant on one person and to add some state-of-the-art use of digital avatars, I have added these avatar actors. I prepared all the content, and they spoke the lines for me. I hope this creative addition to the course meets your approval.
My first avatar, Dr James, provides a general overview of the course and explains how to recognize and deal with persistent feelings of sadness.
I have added two new avatars to present and explore chronic sadness. They provide a useful overview of the nature of sadness, and include comments on CBT, Mindfulness, and Behavioral approaches to overcoming sadness. An exploration of the impact on families is provided, along with a broad perspective of the impact of sadness by age and ethnicity. This is an experimental video, so please ignore the excessive hand movements and enjoy the content and navigation.
You will be able to explain and use one CBT strategy that assists you in diminishing the negative thoughts and sadness and in replacing the annoying and self-defeating ruminations with a rational, logical framework for assessing your current troublesome situation.
This video suggests that you can begin the journey to overcome chronic sadness and emphasizes that you should cultivate self- kindness and celebrate small victories.
