Explore how rebirth frames life transitions through bardo teachings and the hero's journey, offering a structured path, meditations, and practical tools to navigate change.
Gain permission to practice meditation imperfectly and learn to let go of not enough by returning to intention, kindness, and the basis for attention.
Practice kindness and curiosity in meditation, learning to work with your mind and turning obstacles into opportunities for self-compassion and growth.
Explore the four main bardo states in Tibetan Buddhism—the bardo of life, death, clear light, and becoming—along with the dream and meditation states, as transitional in-between phases.
Analyze stage one of transition through homeostasis, boundaries, and the costs of changing too much. Connect Tibetan teachings on the bardo of this life with practice, recognizing reality, and aspirations.
Explore the first two stages of transition—the way things were and their dissolution—and the call to adventure that launches the hero's journey, with narrative examples.
Learn how the Tibetan view divides a person into the course body, subtle body, and mind, supported by the five elements, and traces the death process from earth to space.
Explore the bardo of clear light, the final dissolution stage when the space element dissolves and ordinary identity yields to buddha nature, revealing transformative potential amid loss.
Explore Tibetan models of mind by differentiating sam, the conceptual mind, from yeshe, primordial wisdom, and learn how recognizing yeshe can reveal Buddha nature.
Explore the hero's journey from crossing the threshold into the magical world to rigorous training that forges new skills and returns the hero as a transformed self in ordinary world.
Explore the in-between bardo as the mind's transition from old identity to the next rebirth, highlighting the mental body, six realms, and the role of attention and equanimity.
Explore the fourth stage of becoming, where the in-between dissolves into a new, bigger aspiration guided by trans personal forces, archetypes, and Tibetan embryology.
Explore Tibetan embryology and the bardo transition, detailing how mind meets physical elements at fertilization to seed a new body driven by the five elements and subtle winds.
Follow the hero's journey from crossing into a magical world to returning transformed, bearing a gift that can transform society, as in Buddha's awakening and Dorothy and hobbits.
So many of us long for spiritual transformation or are experiencing a time of transition in our lives, which involves a kind of death and rebirth. This process of deep letting go can be daunting, but it’s also a period of huge spiritual opportunity because we’re letting go of an old sense of self. In this course, we’ll walk through the stages of transformation together, using meditations and other exercises to reflect on our journey. We’ll draw on the wisdom of the Tibetan Buddhist tradition, along with Joseph Campbell and other contemporary authors.
This course is based on a four-week series that's expanded here to a four-section series designed to last about eight weeks. The lectures describe four stages in the process of “rebirth” we may go through when we experience life transitions: the way things were, the dissolution of that, an in-between space in which our identity is temporarily more open, and the gradual formation of a new identity. By the time you finish the course, you'll have the tools you need to understand and reframe previous transitions in your life and to bring greater awareness and intention into your current growth situations.
Feedback from students: "Like many people in my generation, I had recently – at the start of the course – reached the point of needing and wanting to make several major transitions – all at once! – in my life. ... Claire’s course really gave me a new metaphor through which to view the point at which I had found myself: not as the end, but as an important transition time between the old and new stages of my life, during which one of the most important tasks I had was to listen to the subtle new voices/music calling me forward. And one of the great gifts of this course was that it gave me the exciting sense that there was something real, outside myself, in my future, calling to me: I loved that sense of hope and expectancy." And "Thank you for your guidance, awesome insight, and for the opportunity to be part of it. It was a great experience, and I can't wait to do it again. I really want to learn more about rebirth."
