Home studio setup for beginners: all you need to build a personal recording studio for songwriting, music composition and music production

Whether you're a musician, producer, songwriter, composer or aspiring audio or mixing engineer, the prospect of putting together your first home recording studio is an exciting one. However, if you are unsure about just where to start and what’s required, this course will guide you through the key steps of the process.

As the course will show, advances in music technology have made home recording more accessible, more affordable and more powerful. With a few items of carefully chosen equipment, it is now possible to create release-ready or broadcast-ready music in even a modest home studio. And, as we will see here, it’s also very achievable, even on a limited the budget.

So, if you want to get started with your studio project, this course is for you.

What you’ll learn

The course covers three main topics.

First, we will explore the differences – and surprising number of similarities – between commercial recording studios and home recording studios, and consider how a home studio provides a creative platform for every stage of the music production process.

Second - and the main focus of the course - we will identify the key items of equipment you might need to assemble the studio, the features each of those items should offer, and also consider the likely costs involved in purchasing them.

Third, we will also cover some of the most common questions you might face when initially configuring the studio system and outline some of the most effective ways you can learn to fully exploit the potential of your new recording studio.

Meet your instructor

My name is John Walden, and I will be your instructor for this course. I have over 20 years of experience that combines teaching within the UK higher education system, music production for various media applications, and writing about music technology for Sound On Sound magazine.

Much of that work has only been made possible through access to my own home studio systems and I’ll share some of the insights I’ve gained from putting those systems together. Hopefully, those insights will help make it easier for you to begin your own home recording studio journey.
