Instructor
Dr Shan Shan Hou has been passionate about teaching for as long as she can remember. When she was a little girl, she repeated the lessons she learnt at primary school back at home, as a teacher standing in front of her little desk.
Her childhood dream was to become a high-school English teacher. Even though she pursued a different subject at university, she never let go of the dream of teaching, and she chose to become a professor at a university. With an architecture background, she did her PhD the hard way: instead of studying buildings, she conducted research on how to teach architects.
Now, in addition to her research, she seizes any opportunity to work with students at the university. She leads design studios for undergraduate students. She runs international summer schools for undergraduates around the world. She is the course leader for a master’s programme. She supervises master’s and PhD students. She enjoys sharing all her professional knowledge and skills with students.
During her time working with students, she noticed that so many students work very hard but inefficiently. She linked that with her own study experiences. Before university, she was a student with average grades who studied very hard. Then, at university, she transformed elegantly into a top student with joy and ease.
It was all thanks to her maths teacher, who shifted her beliefs. He made her understand the importance of how to study. She learnt that with effective study methods, everyone can be a top student. So, she developed a series of study practices that boosted her grades. She wanted to share these simple and effective practices with others.
One day, it all became very clear to her. She realised her special contribution to the world would be to help students do well in their studies, and thereby have a great start in their adult life.
She founded the Straight-A Classroom as a channel to provide guidance and advice to students so that they can succeed in their studies and thereafter.
She wrote the book Study Smart at University for all university students. She designed the Study Smart Plannerto assist them on their journey.
