In this lecture, you will learn how mobile networks evolved from 1G to 5G and why each new generation was introduced. We will look at the main changes from analogue voice to digital services, mobile broadband and today’s 5G networks. You will also learn why 5G is about more than faster downloads and how it supports new consumer, enterprise and industrial use cases.

  • Lecture 1 Quiz: From 1G to 5G

Requirements

  • No prior knowledge of 5G or mobile networks is required.
  • No programming, engineering, telecommunications or networking experience is required.

Description

5G is often described as just a faster mobile network, but it is much more than that. It is a major evolution in mobile technology, designed to support faster broadband, lower latency, massive numbers of connected devices, enterprise services, private networks, industrial use cases and future connectivity.

This course, 5G and 5G-Advanced for Absolute Beginners, explains the subject in simple, practical and beginner-friendly language. You do not need an engineering, programming or telecommunications background to take this course.

We start with the evolution of mobile networks from 1G to 5G, looking at why each new generation was introduced and what problem it helped solve. We then explain how 5G works in the real world, including 5G New Radio, the 5G Core, spectrum, Standalone and Non-Standalone 5G, and why 5G performance can vary so much from place to place.

The course then introduces 5G-Advanced, also known as 5G-A. You will learn what 5G-Advanced is, why it is not the same as 6G, and why 3GPP Releases 18 and 19 are important. We also look at key 5G-Advanced features and use cases, including AI and machine learning, energy efficiency, RedCap and eRedCap devices, positioning, XR, mobility improvements, private networks and enterprise applications.

Finally, we look at the bigger picture, including satellites, Non-Terrestrial Networks, direct-to-device connectivity and how 5G-Advanced helps prepare the path towards future 6G networks.

By the end of the course, you will have a clear high-level understanding of 5G, 5G-Advanced and the direction of future mobile networks. This course is ideal for students, professionals, business leaders, consultants, policy teams, sales and marketing teams, and anyone who wants to understand 5G and 5G-Advanced without getting lost in complex technical detail.

What you will learn
