Course content

1 section12 lectures1h 22m total length
  • Introduction0:42

Start your 3D art journey with this beginner-friendly introduction to 3ds Max, learning the tools, thought process, and asset-building skills needed to launch a career as a 3D artist.

  • Interface7:11

Explore the 3ds Max interface, four viewports, and orthogonal versus perspective views, then learn navigation, selection, modeling, and basic animation and rendering workflows.

  • 3Ds Max Primitives8:16

Create 3d models with standard primitives in 3ds max, like boxes, cylinders, and cones, then use the gizmo to move, rotate, and modify in the viewport.

  • Editable Poly and what parts 3D models have.8:44

Learn to work with editable poly objects in 3ds max: select and delete assets, zoom, convert to editable poly, edit vertices, edges, borders, polygons, extrude, bevel, and bridge.

  • Splines and how to use them.15:00

discover how to create and edit splines in 3ds Max, convert lines into 3d geometry via modifiers, snapping, welds, and extrusion to build simple models such as a chair.

  • Modeling Chess6:24

Create a 1 meter square plane, trace half the chess piece, and model it in 3ds max. Apply the extrude modifier for thickness.

  • Animation basics4:52

Learn to edit the timeline and keyframes, and move a box along the x axis. Use graph and curve editors to refine motion for smoother animation.

  • Modeling a guitar8:51

Model a guitar body in 3ds Max for beginners by using a plane, symmetry, and editable poly to extrude, weld, and refine vertices into a guitar shape.

  • Control Edges and High Poly meshes.5:22

Master control edges in 3ds Max to shape high poly models with adjustable sharpness. Use connect, extrude, and borders to create smooth bases and sharp corners.

  • Adding details and smoothing our geometry.3:25

Add control edges to maintain four-sided guitar topology, weld stray vertices, and then smooth the model with TurboSmooth and iterations to achieve a stronger, smoother geometry.

  • Material, lights and Render basics9:52

Apply physically based materials to the guitar and render a scene with Arnold lights. Use an environment map to illuminate and enhance the final render.

  • Arnold Rendering basics3:48

Explore Arnold rendering basics in 3ds Max for beginners by learning how to switch renderers, configure common settings, and apply denoising for cleaner final images.

Requirements

  • You don't need any previous experience with the software.

Description

Welcome to my beginners course for 3Ds Max. In this course I'll show you the basics and how to use the software so that you can start your journey as a 3D Artist. I'm Stefan Ivanov a professional 3D Artist with more than 12 years of experience from this 12 years, 5 I worked in key positions where creating internal training and presentations for different events were some of my responsibilities. The structure and information in the course is going to be based on modern studio standards and cover key topics.

KEY TOPICS:

- Interface - I'll help you understand the logic behind 3Ds Max interface, so that you will remember where different types functions can be found.

- Navigation - Navigating in 3D space can be hard in the beginning, but with the exercises and videos in this course you will get the hang of it in no time.

- 3D Primitives - Understanding what primitives are and what shapes are included in 3Ds Max can be very useful for your projects.

- Editable Poly and from what are 3D models constructed

- Modifiers - We will look into some useful modifies and explore how they work.

- Splines - One of the most powerful tools inside 3Ds Max.

- Animation basics - I'll cover a little bit of animation basics, in case you are an animator that is not starting its career.

- Materials - We will look into the 3Ds Max material editor.

- Rendering - Once you've done something amazing of course you will want to share it and what better way than creating a beautiful render of it.

I'll explain for each function the logic behind it and in what cases it can be used. This will give you the confidence of trying and exploring new ways of modeling, using modifiers and boost your creativity. The course is packed with information and exercises for you that are designed to polish the most important skills for beginners. After finishing the course you will feel confident to start an intermediate level course for specific topics.
