Just Being, or being alive has a history of billions of years on earth. In comparison, being human has been less than 1% of the existence of life being on earth!
As we can see from this progression infographic, being human has been a fairly recent occurrence amidst the existence and evolution of life for billions of years on earth. How are we human beings doing ? Well, seems fairly ok given that human life expectancy has grown 5 times in about 200,000 years!
Human life has therefore not just been about being, but about being better!
Being Better by Being Skilled, Being Better Skilled! 4-5 Millions Years ago, being human perhaps required just a couple of skills – the skill of gathering food for survival and once the tummy was full, the skill of finding a shelter for safety from the dangers lurking in the surrounding environment. Thus began the journey of humans and skills stretching over millions of years in time, witnessing evolutionary changes and experiencing adaptive benefits of being better skilled.
Fast forward into the 21st century, and we soon realize that its now all about being rapidly skilled. Take for example the skill of human communication languages. About 6500 spoken languages have evolved in the last 7000 years. Contrast that with the 9000 programming languages that have evolved in the last 70 years. 9000 machine languages in 70 years v/s 6500 human languages in 7000 years. That’s 50% more languages at an incredible 100 times faster speed of evolution. There’s more – of the 9000 programming languages, just about 45 of them are being actively used today, making their extinction rate an astonishing 99% and driving the need for humans to be reskilled on newer programming languages rapidly. Imagine you had to learn a couple of new human languages every year for your entire life!!
Being rapidly skilled has resulted in a variety of mind blowing implications! Be it the human population explosion in the last few centuries, or the ease and rapidity of meeting new people online as compared to the traditional forms of meeting them as neighbors, classmates or work colleagues. Or the crazy growth of the new age crypto currency in just this last decade!
Technology has witnessed accelerated growth in the last few centuries. In summary the rapidity of technology acceleration across industrial revolutions has resulted in all us being rapidly disrupted. Well not just us, but mother earth too hasn’t been spared. Take a look at this moving infographic that capture the earth surface temperature anomalies in the last 120 years.
All this is bewildering to say the least! But there is another urgently pressing aspect to being bewildered and that’s got to do with the skills gap! There's more..
Our world is going to change and learn more in the next 20 years than in the previous 300 or 3 million years! Being skilled for work therefore means overcoming the challenges in our world of education and life that is increasingly becoming crowded, competitive and complex by leveraging the opportunities of being increasingly connected, communicable and collaborative. Even as we get repeatedly disrupted frequently!
A look at some global benchmarks to highlight the importance of being skilled for work!
Here’s some grounds up reality check from a live audience poll that validates everything we have showcased. Look at the huge difference in the response of industry professionals versus management students polled. A glaring proof of the skills gap between academia and industry. Now that we know the situation, we need to act! Each one of us, each one of you individually needs to act. There is no other option. There cannot be plan B.
The first action item for each individual to do is To Identify and List Your Happily Effective Skills. Your honest thoughtful answers that build this list are the only right answers! The list that you see here is an example list for your better comprehension of the first action todo.
This one is easy to get started. All you need to do is make a list of skills that you have acquired over time that are effective for you and also make you happy! Effective skills are those that fetch you a tangible reward upon their execution, since they are of value to others. Happy skills are those you have acquired over the years and you just enjoy it when you are executing them for yourself or for anyone else. For example, if you are a professional, you may have acquired a skill for building healthy rewarding relationships (a social skill) with your customers, colleagues and other peer professionals. You find yourself happy executing it, growing your relationships and it has fetched you a tangible, consistent results over time, be it in the form of sales, or rewards or recognitions. In short, you have a skill that you are happy executing and others value it too.
This is another example list of your first action todo. As you think about your acquired skills, you will come across skills that make you happy but are of no relevance to others OR skills that fetch you a return but you are not quite happy executing them. This information too is valuable and can be listed separately. For example, this can include your math skill assuming you are good at it, but would happily give up, given a choice! What matters is that you just find the will, inspiration and motivation to do it! Just do it!
Once you have your happily effective skills list categorized, the next important thing TO DO is to benchmark and understand your true “skills status” vis-à-vis the expected future skills need. The way to do that is to compare your skill category with their expected future status shown here in this infographic. The status of some such skills from different categories is shown scattered across the four different quadrants of the infographic. Your aim is to be able to better understand your own skills status and its relative position amidst the four quadrants. The best quadrant is the top right quadrant. Knowing where your skills status is today and setting your skills status to be future ready will help you understand your own skills gap going forward.
Refine your understanding of your skills status by comparing your skills categories with these different set of infographics.
