A general introduction to yoga, particularly in the kundalini tradition, and the transformational power of narrative for yoga as a body-mind practice.
An overview of the 3 yoga sessions (sets) presented in this course. They cover 3 themes: travel, victory, and service. Other themes are possible.
What is the "hero's journey" and how does it relate to yoga? We set through some essential points, useful if you want to make your own heroic yoga sets.
This course is for everyone, regardless of your background. Whether you are a yoga teacher, kundalini yoga student, a student of some other tradition, or a newbie, you will find it useful.
Includes slide deck with lyrics for 9 common kundalini mantras (chants) to use during the yoga exercises.
We start this 1-hour yoga set to flex and prepare your whole body for travel into a successful future. You tune in, making preparations for travel, and catch your direction. For this session, you may want to start with a destination in mind in your life, or be open to locating a destination.
The set continues. You get busy with and go far with focus on your destination, and learn to work with current and wind (for when you get stuck).
Finally, we arrive at our new location, enjoy a long rest to soak in the lesson, and give thanks.
This 1-hour yoga set evokes a solar or masculine energy. For this session, you may want to start with a problem or challenge in mind to solve, to be open locating one. And first, we tune in and prepare to move with purpose as we activate our resource.
In the heat of battle, you can find your place of peace and power, and learn to flow and stretch when faced with complexity.
Ultimately, you find victory in the heart of the matter, and can rest and give thanks.
This 1-hour yoga set evokes a lunar or feminine energy. After tuning in and getting comfortable, you will find greater balance, particularly with respect to some task, job, person or calling in life.
In this 3rd act, the penultimate exercises reveal the power of service. And we end with rest and thanksgiving. Ideally, you come with a devotion or responsibility in mind, or open to locate one.
Even among people who know Dr. Carl G. Jung's work, they may be surprised to hear he studied yoga. He did more than dabble. We know this from his lectures on yoga, conversations with Indian yogis, and his tour of India. These lectures are somewhat hard to follow. But what can we learn from them?
Chakras are a well-known aspect of yoga. But what are they? We can define them multiple, complementary ways. And Jung discussed the chakras in depth, from a psychological and anthropological view.
Energy flows through the body. Kundalini is the huge reservoir of energetic potential that resides within us, often deep in the body. In most people, it lies dormant, waiting to be awakened and worked with productively. To work in a healthy with with this energy, yoga helps tone the body, mind, and spirit.
Reflect on areas of your life that need help, and how body-mind practices address the whole person, not just one aspect like mental strategizing only, attending to emotions only, or hitting the gym only.
Please reflect and do a gut-check now. How do you feel? What does wellness look like? What stresses are you dealing with? And what baggage have you been carrying. Get personal on yourself to prepare for the "kind of person" you want to express.
Body-mind practices like yoga are grounded in science, in the architecture of nervous system. We are far more than a brain in a body. The nervous system runs through the whole body. And the ANS, of Autonomic Nervous System, holds a key to understanding much of yoga's power.
Consciousness is not simply a state of awareness or mental focus. We step through Jung's description to understand consciousness as something that moves organically, situationally, and developmentally.
As Jung saw it, the Western tradition is more about analysis, skill-building, and self-improvement. In contrast, the Eastern tradition including yoga is more about about quieting, clearing baggage, and emptying oneself to better connect with Universal Consciousness.
People tend to learn best by “doing” in a meaningful way. That means personal experience and compelling stories. What better way, then, to bring success into your life, by tapping the power of yoga to act out a hero’s journey!
This course offers three 1-hour yoga sessions: You are the hero acting out three empowering steps in a legendary story arc. The sessions are mostly based on kundalini yoga mixed with some qigong-inspired kriya in the second session. Together, the sessions capture the spirits of sun, moon, and stars, and they open the three vital energy channels: ida, pingala, and sushumna.
Act/Session #1, "Over Mountains and Seas", flexes and prepares your whole body. After tuning in and preparing to travel, you will catch your direction, go far with focus to your destination, and learn to work with current and wind (for when you get stuck). Finally, you arrive at your new location, and can rest and give thanks.
Act/Session #2, “Flow of the Spirit Warrior”, evokes a solar or masculine energy. After tuning in and preparing to move, you will activate your resources, find peace and power (in the eye of the storm), and stretch to handle a lot of complexity. Ultimately, you are victorious in the heart of the matter, and can rest and give thanks.
Act/Session #3, “Calm and Joyful Service”, evokes a lunar or feminine energy. After tuning in and getting comfortable into the space, you will find balance, eliminate hidden stressors (tension, confusion, and frustration), dance to the music (with the whole body), and experience the power of service. This ends with rest and thanksgiving.
You can complete these sessions by doing 1/day, 3 days in a row, or every-other day in a week, several weeks in a row, or pack them in back-to-back with breaks to make a long morning, afternoon or evening workshop for yourself or your group.
If you are new to doing yoga, this course is for you. No prior experience is needed.
After the yoga sets are 8 lectures that highlight the interests and insights of the famous Dr. Carl G. Jung. Little do many know: Jung traveled India, spoke with yogis, and studied yoga. He spoke on kundalini, and this course touches on 6 key concepts from his work that relate to yoga.
If you are a regular student of kundalini yoga, you will find a lot of familiar kriyas plus some new exercises put together in a little bit of a different way. Students of other yoga traditions will get a fresh experience. And for students of qigong, the second session here mixes in some familiar moves, slightly adjusted to the kundalini yoga style.
Finally, for yoga teachers, this course acts as an example of how you can put together your own "hero’s journey" sets. By following the classic principles of narrative, you can help your students get even closer to fulfilling their potential.
Of course, you can repeat this course as often as you like to find to whatever benefit you need, and to help fulfill your life’s journeys, challenges, and goals.
