ABOUT THE COURSE
Amazon, Apple, Facebook, and Google (aka, The Gang of Four) are perhaps the four most successful companies around right now--and for good reason. Each company has embraced platform strategies, built different planks, expanded their businesses in new and interesting directions, and grown powerful ecosystems.
In this course based off of his highly acclaimed book The Age of the Platform, author Phil Simon distills the essence of platforms—and what has made these companies so successful. What's more, he provides inside tips and advice for businesses of all sizes and types can learn from The Gang of Four.
In this brief introduction, I set the table for the course.
In this section, I discuss the importance of leaders for platforms to flourish. I also put business platforms and ecosystems in their historical contexts.
In this section, I cover how to build a platform as well as the importance of ecosystems, particularly as they relate to external innovation.
Phil Simon is a frequent keynote speaker and recognized technology authority. He is the award-winning author of seven management books, most recently Message Not Received: Why Business Communication Is Broken and How to Fix It. He consults organizations on matters related to communications, strategy, data, and technology. His contributions have been featured on The Harvard Business Review, The New York Times, Fox News, and many other sites. In the fall of 2016, he joined the faculty at Arizona State University’s W. P. Carey School of Business.
