Who better to guide you when making a Best Man / Wedding speech than Lynn Ferguson! Lynn has many years of stand-up comedy under her belt. She wrote jokes for The Late Late Show and consulted on Pixar's Brave.. She's also been Best "Man" at many weddings of course! She co-founded YouTellYours to help everyone to tell their stories authentically.
Most people don’t make speeches and then when they do, it’s on this massively important occasion. For many people doing a best man/woman speech, this may be the first speech they’ve ever done.
But even people who talk for a living can find wedding speeches daunting, because the stakes are so high. It's a once in a lifetime occasion. A load of planning has gone into this day and the people you care most about are depending on you.
It's also tricky because everybody seems to have a different idea of what the Best Man's speech has to be. It has to be funny enough. It has to be a little bit emotional. It can’t be too rude! And there are a whole host of things you must not mention and a whole host of things you must cover.
And whilst you’re remembering all the things you must and must not say.. and trying to be funny enough, emotional enough and respectful enough.. you also have to sound natural.
OK, so that’s where this course can help. This course is a series of lessons designed to help you craft the perfect wedding speech to suit you. Think of it as a kind of made to measure suit.
This course consists mostly of spoken exercises. That's because doing a speech at a wedding is by its very nature more of a spoken task than a written one. Though, we’ll cover how to find your written content too.
You’ll need some form of recording equipment - a cell phone would do. And somewhere to make notes. If you're a paper person, some paper, and if you're more comfortable with a keyboard, open up a file on your computer.
Aside from that, all that's needed is you. A best man speech is both an honor and a wonderful experience. So let's construct that speech for you. One that is funny enough, emotional enough and respectful enough.. and all delivered so that you also sound completely natural and authentic.

So, lets start with the first exercise to help find out your speech tone.
Just a reminder to get set up to record...
Handy 2 minute timer for the exercise.
Good job. Look at you, now you’ve made your first completely impromptu 2 minute speech. What’s brilliant is that a wedding speech is really ideally about 5 minutes so you’re pretty much already there.
This lesson draws out the lessons from the exercise and helps you listen back with context and rose-tinted spectacles.
Alright, In the exercise.. How did you sound? Were you happy? Were you miserable?
In this lesson we help put the Best man's speech into context and give some examples of how to sound happier, more vibrant and confident.
Fast facts for the structure of your speech.
In this lesson we cover in detail how to introduce yourself and lead into your speech / story.
Yes, it's time to get ready to start telling your Best Man stories. A Best Man's speech is a spoken word activity, so there's no need to start writing...
So in this lesson we’re going to have a timed exercise. We give you example topics to work from and you can use your own if you have a story you want to try our first.
And this is the time to find the problems. Get tongue tied or lost now really is no big shake. Just learn from the mistake and re-start again.
A reminder list of the main Best Man speech topics.
When you tell your story, often you'll naturally have lots you wanted to say and may well now want to cut out a bunch of the details - keeping the core of what's important to the story.
This lesson covers what to look for when listening to your story and strategies for the blockages that can appear. Like what to do if you don't like your story, or it doesn't sound that way you want, or you don't know what story to tell.
Are we there yet? Nearly? In this lesson we talk about how to polish / refine your story and how to solve any snags or doubts about the story you're telling.
Ok so now you've got your introduction sorted and your two to three minute story and we’re rounding up the speech and heading into the toast. So how do you transition from the story to the toast? Find out here.
There's one last very important thing to be done! Don't forget to do this, it will make all the difference...
You know how we told you what we were going to tell you, then we told you exactly that?
Well now we're telling you what we told you and wishing you and your newlyweds all the best!!
