|Section 1: Basic Digital Photography: A Beginners DSLR Instructional|
THANK YOU for taking this course & welcome to Basic Digital Photography!!
My name is Kimberly & I am your instructor for this course. Photography has been a passion of mine for over ten years now. There is nothing better than taking a photo that captures the mood, essence or emotion of a person, environment or setting! I hope this course will provide an overview and education on the fundamentals of your camera.
In order to be completely prepared for this course, it would be very helpful to have your camera and manual readily available so that you can follow along. I would also recommend that you move through the course at a slower pace so that you can adequately build on information as you move through the course. This will help you retain the information being covered and it will prove to be less overwhelming if you let yourself digest the material before moving to the next lecture.
See you in lecture one!
In this lecture, we will dive into the meat of the course! Throughout the class, we will explore information and examples relating to the Photographer's Toolkit, Understanding Exposure, and Choosing Camera Settings. This particular lecture will strictly highlight camera terminology, settings, and it will provide information on various lens types, and external flashes. Feel free to refer to the downloadable materials section for the Powerpoint in PDF form, as well as some visual examples of prime vs. zoom lenses and how a photo looks with and without a diffuser.
Make sure you check out the external resources section for additional information on lenses that are not covered during the actual lecture part of the course!
Enjoy the lecture!
Moving right along! Hopefully everyone is learning a lot and having fun so far!
This lecture is entitled Understanding Exposure. If there are three major points I could emphasize in this lecture they would be the ISO, aperture and shutter speed sections of the PowerPoint. I would highly recommend printing those slides out so that you can reference them easily.
The shutter speed slide that displays the arrow graphic is a GREAT cheat sheet for you as you practice some of the techniques and settings in this course. There is a follow up slide that shows the visual differences between two very different shutter speeds - Please note that the carousel is moving in the photo, which definitely has an impact on which shutter speed you should decide on.
The same goes for aperture and shutter speed! Both are so important to understand and are fundamental settings that you should be aware of. There are a couple of cheat sheet slides that will help you during practice, too!
Be sure to review the external resources section for some inspiration and additional visual examples of ISO, shutter speed and aperture!
Choosing camera settings is the next topic we will be covering! This section builds on the information that we have previously learned. If that information was confusing at all, I would recommend reviewing it again or asking questions before moving forward with the course.
Major take-aways & highlights from this course should include being able to determine the differences between RAW and Jpeg files (and the advantages to each), Automatic, Manual and In-Between Settings, obtaining knowledge about white balance presets and metering.
Thanks again for enrolling in this course! We covered a significant amount of information in a short amount of time. After practicing some of the skills & techniques, you will quickly be able to implement what you have learned.
If you have any questions or comments about the course material, feel free to contact me!
I will be finalizing additional courses over the next couple of months. I hope to see you all in those courses, as well! Best of luck to you as you become more familiar with your cameras!
