How to Make a Celebrity Mash-Up
in Photoshop

Mash-Up Gallery:

To the uninitiated, Photoshop can be as scary as tightrope walking in butter-slicked shoes. But this powerful program isn’t nearly as difficult to navigate as many imagine. If you’ve got basic Adobe Suite skills (or are a determined beginner) this fun tutorial will help you learn the ropes of some simple, but powerful, Photoshop tools.

Below are a few tools you’ll get to know in this tutorial. You can use the tools simply by hitting the letter in parenthesis on your keyboard.

One could talk about tools forever, but it’s best to learn by doing. So, jump right into this tutorial or check out some of our awesome courses to really bring your Photoshop skills up to snuff!

Note: This tutorial uses Photoshop version CS6. If you have a different version, you may notice some differences as you go through the steps.

Combining Two Images’ Elements

Combining two images
1
Open the images you want to use in Photoshop. For this tutorial, I used the above images of Jackson Pollock, Michael Jackson, and a Pollock painting. You can find and download the images here (using CTRL click):
Combining two images step 2
2

Use the Magic Wand tool (W) to select the hair in the Michael Jackson photo. To do this, either hit W on your keyboard or click and hold down the Lasso tool icon circled above and select Magic Wand Tool. Play with the tool’s tolerance level until you get the selection you want. If the Magic Wand selects more than you want, lower the number. If you want more, increase it. I set mine to 17%.

3

Copy the hair and paste it into the Pollock image. Rename your layer ‘Hair’ in the bottom-right corner menu.

Combining two images step 3
4

Fit the hair to Pollock’s head. Use Edit > Transform > Scale and Warp to do this. Scale and Warp allow you to manipulate and move the image until you have it where you want. When you’re finished, hit enter.

  • Tip: Hold down the shift as you scale to keep proportions intact.
Combining two images step 4
5

Lower the hair layer’s opacity so you can see Pollock’s head beneath it. Then, use the Eraser tool (E) to clear away the hair overlapping Pollock’s ear.

  • Tip: Use a soft brush (circled above) around skin edges to create a natural effect.
6

Click into the tab with your second Jackson image. Use the Magic Wand (W) or magnetic Lasso tool (L) to select Jackson’s coat. Copy and paste it into your Pollock picture. Name your new layer ‘Coat’.

7

Repeat steps 4 and 5 for the coat.

8

Use the magnetic Lasso tool (L) to select each piece of the coat’s collar. Scale and Warp the pieces (Edit > Transform > Scale and Warp) to help the collar curve around Pollock’s neck. When you’re finished with each adjustment, hit enter.

Adjusting Hue

9

Now, we need to adjust the coat brightness so it matches the Pollock background. Click on the ‘Coat’ layer. Then, go to Image > Adjustments > Brightness/Contrast. Play with the brightness and contrast until the coat looks natural in the photo. You can also adjust the coat’s color and tone using Image > Adjustments > Vibrance.

10

Repeat step 9 for the ‘Hair’ layer.

Simple Delete and Fill Techniques

Combining two images step 5
11

See that bit of Pollock’s collar poking out from behind Jackson’s jacket? Let’s delete it. Click on the ‘Background’ (Pollock) layer and unlock it by clicking on the lock symbol. Use the magnetic Lasso (L) to select the part of Pollock’s collar not covered by Jackson’s coat. Hit delete.

12

Under Contents in the resulting pop-up, make sure that Content-Aware is selected. This option will detect what is around the image and use it to fill in your deleted area. Click OK. Photoshop will delete the excess collar and fill in the background for you.

Adding Overlay to an Existing Object

Combining two images step 6
13

Open up your Pollock painting. Select splatters to put on the coat by going to Select > Color Range. Click the color you want to select. Increase the Fuzziness to add more variants of the same color. The higher the fuzziness is set, the more related hues of a given color will be included in your selection.

  • Tip: Use the Eyedropper with the + to add new splatter colors to your selection.
14

Paste the splatters into your working canvas. Name your new layer, then scale to fit the coat. I pasted splatters in two layers to test the look. You can combine the layers via Merge from the context menu (right-click).

Combining two images step 7
15

Use the Eraser tool (E) to carve away outlying splatters.

16

Use the regular Lasso tool (press shift + L to toggle between the “magnetic” and “regular” Lasso) to select parts of the splatters that overlap places where the coat wrinkles or falls in shadow. Adjust the splatters using your Warp tool to shape the overlay to the coat’s folds and use Image > Adjustment > Exposure to mimic shadow.

Drawing with Basic Brush Tools

Combining two images step 8
17

Add a new layer entitled ‘Brows’. Use the Eyedropper tool (I) to select color from the hair. Sketch brows with your Brush tool (B). I used the ‘Round Angle Low Stiffness’ brush (circled).

Tada! Your masterpiece is now complete. Zoom out (press Z then hold down ‘alt’ as you click) to admire your work!
