The Addition For Young Learners course, created by author and teacher, Marc Lapointe, is specifically designed to teach young children (kindergarten - elementary) how to master addition.  Whether your child is ready and eager to dive into addition for the first time, or your son or daughter struggles to successfully grasp addition procedures and concepts, this course will provide the foundation he or she needs to successfully tackle any addition problem.

Highlights include:

Lessons are kept concise so that your child can easily remember and practice new skills.

Lesson 1 - First Steps
2 Lectures 12:41

In today's lesson you will learn how to add by using objects.  This is the first step in understanding what is happening when you are adding numbers together.  By using visuals - or objects - you can "see" that when we add, we are always increasing the total number.

Lesson 1 - First Steps
03:20

Answer key for the lesson 1 worksheet: First Steps.  It's important that you complete the Practice Worksheet for Lesson 1 before watching the answer key. We will go over each question, step by step,  so that, if you are having any problems with the work, you will see exactly how we came to the correct answer.

Lesson 2 - The Numberline
2 Lectures 19:58

Welcome to lesson # 2!  Today, you're going to be introduced to the numberline.  The numberline is just a kind of visual to help you "see" what happens when you're adding.  In our last lesson you used objects to help you add. Our goal, of course, is for you to get to the point where you don't need to use objects, numberlines, or any other kind of "visual" (like fingers) to help you add.   But those are lessons for another day!

Lesson 2 - The Numberline
04:35

Answer key for lesson 2 worksheet: The Numberline.   It's important that you complete the Practice Worksheet for Lesson 2 before watching the answer key. We will go over each question, step by step,  so that, if you are having any problems with the work, you will see exactly how we came to the correct answer.

Lesson 3 - Place Value
2 Lectures 13:55

Before we can begin to add larger numbers together (numbers with at least two digits), you will first need to understand place value.  You may already know that every digit in a number has a "place" but if you're a little fuzzy on what that means or have never really heard of this idea before, then today's lesson will be a big help!

Lesson 3 - Place Value
04:08

Answer Key for the lesson 3 worksheet: Place Value.   It's important that you complete the Practice Worksheet for Lesson 3 before watching the answer key. We will go over each question, step by step,  so that, if you are having any problems with the work, you will see exactly how we came to the correct answer.

Lesson 4 - Adding One and Two Digit Numbers
2 Lectures 18:22

Now that you've completed the lesson on place value, you're ready to begin adding larger numbers.  You will now see why our understanding of place value is so important as we start to get into more difficult addition problem.

The Commonsense Educator

I am passionate about education.  Actually, to be more specific, I am keenly interested in helping parents understand the ins and outs of our system of education and to arm them with the information they need in order for their kids to be successful in school.

Besides the fact that I have been involved in education for over 2 decades, earned a Masters Degree in Education, have taught at the high school and middle school level, and published several books on education, I am a parent.  So, while I may have a deep understanding of the challenges that face our schools, I also appreciate how, at the end of the day, we just want our kids to reach their potential. My hope is that, through my books, blogs, videos and, of course, growing library of online courses, I can provide parents - and especially their kids - with guidance that will lead to greater success in school.
