Our course starts off with an introduction into how the web works. You don’t need to be an IT professional to understand the basics of how information flows over the Internet, but it is important to have a solid working knowledge of the concepts. Websites contain information, and this section gives you a clear understanding of how that information gets to the users who need it.

What is XHTML and how is it different from plain old HTML? Why is it better? This class is vitally important because here we learn the latest markup language that drives the web, XHTML. In this part of the course we begin building our project site using XHTML and web standards laid down by the World Wide Web Consortium, an international community that develops standards to ensure the long-term growth of the Web. You will be amazed at the power and simplicity of this easy to use markup language!

Now that we have an understanding of the basics of XHTML it is time to jump into our first real web site!

Over the next few chapters we are going to build a site for our fictitious web design business, Maui Webtronics, where potential clients will find information about our company. The new site is going to have the following features:

• A "Home" page introducing the company and welcoming the visitor
• An "About Us" page to display in-depth company information
• A "Contact Us" page for contact information (no big surprise there)
• A "Proposals" page where prospective clients can tell us about their project
• A "Products" page where people can buy a t-shirt with our logo

In this chapter we learn about casscading style sheets or CSS. CSS is a language that allows us to change elements such as font, text color, background, borders and the position of elements on the page. CSS was designed to keep the content of web pages separate from the presentation or layout. By using CSS you can change the way your pages look without ever having to touch your content.

In the early days of web design CSS was used primarily to style text on the page, while other methods were used to control layout. Modern web browsers, however, all support the full capabilities of CSS, which makes it easy to create borders, backgrounds, and position items anywhere on a document.

What is a table? A table is a method of arranging data into rows and columns of cells. If you have ever looked at a calendar or used a spreadsheet program like Microsoft Excel then you are familiar with this concept. In this chapter we learn how to create tables with html and style them with css.

Though informative, relevant text is essential to any website, a picture is still worth "a thousand words." The Web would be a pretty boring place without images, which not only make your site more exciting, but also easier to use. In this chapter we will learn how to manipulate images using Adobe Photoshop, and the best practices for utilizing those images in our site.

Anyone who has ever purchased a product, signed up for a newsletter, or created any kind of account on the Internet is familiar with forms. Forms are special web pages that collect data such as "Name", "Address", "Email", etc., and send that data to a server for processing. With forms, we create two-way communication on the Web. Every time you enter information in your Facebook account, or buy something on Ebay, or even Twitter, you are using a web form.

What is JavaScript? JavaScript is an object-oriented scripting language that lets you make your pages interact with your users and respond to what they do. You can do some really amazing stuff with JavaScript, and we're going to look at the basic building blocks in this chapter.
