Description

The globalized nature of the Maritime Industry and the introduction of standardised English for maritime use by the IMO has made it necessary for any professional working within the industry, whether in shipping, logistics, in a harbor, or on a merchant ship, to be able to speak and understand English, and especially English as it is used within the maritime context. Having the skills to communicate at sea and in port is critical, since by far the majority of accidents at sea are caused by miscommunication.

This course therefore aims to introduce the grammar and vocabulary that will be necessary for students and professionals in the maritime sector to be able to begin to communicate effectively in English in their everyday working environment. This is not a course teaching the standardised IMO phrases, but rather a course to precede this, to acclimatise the student to the basic English needed to communicate effectively in all situations on board and in port.

The course has a companion ibook, which is available from the iBookstore, or can be obtained from the lecturer as a pdf, free of charge. The ibook text is also clearly legible in the video lectures.

The course is divided in accordance with the chapters laid out in the companion ibook, and there are over 50 hours of lectures, which may be completed at the student's own pace.

Who this course is for:

  • This course is aimed at students who intend to work in the maritime or logistics sectors, or maritime professionals who want to brush up on or improve their English, or Naval cadets. Students need a basic grasp of general English, at at least the A1 level in accordance with the European framework of reference for languages.
