Understanding the definition of "sexual fetishes" (paraphilias) and learning about the each paraphilic disorder in the DSM 5.
Understanding causal theories of "sexual fetishes."
Understanding sexual masochism, sadism, voyeuristic disorder ("peeping Tom"), and exhibitionistic disorder along with their specific causes. Learning five principles of healthy sexuality to manage paraphilias ("sexual fetishes").
Understanding the process of recovery from sex addiction and introducing the student to the 20 practical self-help techniques.
Learning and applying techniques 1-5: De-objectification, sexual fantasy journaling, intervention cards, letter to self, and aversive thoughts.
Learning and applying techniques 6-10: Circle of risk, acting out cycle, reducing shame, masturbatory reconditioning, and relaxation techniques I (deep breathing).
Learning and applying techniques 11-13: Relaxation techniques II (mindfulness and imagery), exploring underlying issues and motivations, and exploring underlying schemas/ filters.
Learning and applying techniques 14-20: Expanding hobbies and interests, grieving unhealthy sexual behaviors, establishing healthy sexual boundaries, expanding social support,developing empathy and compassion, pursuing higher-level ideals, and relapse prevention.
This course is primarily designed as a self-help course for those who struggle with sex addiction and/or have a difficult time with managing their "sexual fetishes" (paraphilias and paraphilic disorders) as defined in the DSM 5. This course may also be helpful for licensed counselors and psychologists who want to learn practical techniques to help their clients overcome sex addiction.
